Barnhorst Drives in Three as Baseball Falls to Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. — Senior second baseman Matt Barnhorst recorded his second straight multi-RBI day as the Cornell baseball team fell to Richmond, 8-4, in the rubber match of a three-game weekend series at a hazy Pitt Field on Sunday afternoon.

Barnhorst, who drove in four runs in Saturday's 9-3 victory, collected three RBI on the power of a fourth-inning two-run home run and a ninth-inning RBI single in the setback for the Big Red (2-9). Freshman third baseman Owen Carlson joined Barnhorst in registering multiple base knocks.

Jason Shockley went 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBI in Richmond's (9-10) victory. RJ Rickabaugh led the Spiders with three hits, two of which were doubles, and drove in a pair of runs. Phil Bernstein joined Shockley and Bernstein in posting a multi-hit day.

Vincent Corso was the Spiders' winning pitcher of record after allowing an unearned run on two hits over two innings of relief of Jackson Kraemer, who pitched the first four innings. Kraemer gave up two hits and two runs while fanning three Big Red batters.

Sophomore right-hander Ethan Hamill was handed the loss for the Big Red after allowing five runs (three earned) on four hits over his 4.1 innings of work. He issued a trio of free passes and had one strikeout in his first start of the season.

The Spiders opened the contest by plating two unearned runs in the first inning. Richmond's leadoff hitter, DJ Pacheco, reached on a Cornell fielding error before being doubled home by Bernstein. Rickabaugh logged his first double of the day immediately following a Cornell double play, scoring Bernstein to give Richmond an early two-run lead.

In the fourth inning, Barnhorst hit his second home run in as many games, a one-out blast to left-center field, to tie the game at 2-2.

A three-run home run by Shockley in the fifth inning broke open a 2-2 tie, ultimately giving the Spiders the lead for good.

Freshman catcher Mark Quatrani generated from St. Patrick's Day luck in the next half inning when his base hit took a generous bounce off the outfield wall, leading to an RBI triple that scored Barnhorst from first base after reaching on a fielding error.

Rickabaugh's second double of the day was roped down the right-field line, igniting a three-run seventh inning for the Spiders to increase their lead to 8-3.

After a two-out single by senior first baseman Braden Mack, Barnhorst logged his second hit of the day and his third RBI with a single to left-center field to plate Carlson.

GAME NOTES
• Sunday was the 11th meeting between Cornell and Richmond, as the Spiders took an 8-3 lead in the all-time series since the first meeting in 1938.

• Senior designated hitter Nathan Waugh extended his hit streak to 15 games, dating back to last season. Waugh's hit streak is the longest by a Big Red hitter since Brian Billigen posted hits in 16 consecutive games during the 2012 season.

• Junior center fielder Jakobi Davis increased his on-base streak to 14 games with his eighth-inning two-out single.

• Cornell accumulated 10-plus hits in all three games of its series with Richmond, marking the first time it had at least 10 hits in all games of a three-game series since doing so in last year's series against Harvard on April 14-15.
