BETHANY BEACH, Del. -- Cornell women's tennis bested Delaware, 4-1, in a neutral site meeting on Saturday evening, putting together its second set of consecutive victories this season, and first since the opening weekend of dual matches. With the win, Cornell improves to 5-8 on the season, and Delaware falls to 9-5.
The Big Red opened the day with a victory in two straight doubles matches.
Jenny Wong and
Victoria Zhao were the first to get a win, besting Maryia Hrynashka and Julieta Honrubia, 6-3, in the no. 2 doubles match.
Michelle Ryndin and
Martina Marica followed with a 6-3 win over Samantha Svendsen and Paulina Jurkowska in the no. 3 match.
Lauren Stein and
Emma Baker's match against Eliza Askarova and Alex Staiculescu went down as unfinished with Cornell clinching the double's point, but the Big Red pair held a 5-3 edge before its conclusion.
Ryndin kept the Big Red momentum up, topping Askarova in the no. 2 singles match, 6-2, 6-2 to move Cornell's lead to 2-0. Hrynashka got the only point for the Blue hens with a 6-3, 6-3 showing over Wong in the no. 4 singles match. Baker righted the ship with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Alina Vasilenko in the no. 3 match.
Gia Graziano sealed the victory for Cornell with a comeback win over Staiculescu in the no. 5 match 1-6, 6-1, 6-1. Stein's match against Slade Coetzee and
Tanya Fan's match against Honrubia each went down as unfinished.
Cornell is back to the courts tomorrow at Drexel when the team takes on Drexel in Philadelphia, Pa. Matches are set to begin at 11 a.m.
