ITHACA, N.Y. — Cornell senior wrestler Vito Arujau has been named the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Wrestler of the Year, the EIWA announced on Monday. Arujau received the honor after a vote by the league's coaches.
Arujau (133 pounds) won his second straight NCAA championship in Kansas City on March 23, becoming Cornell's fourth two-time champion and sixth overall multi-time champion. He's one of nine four-time All-Americans in Cornell history.
Arujau, who went 18-2 this season, took out the top three seeds in his bracket at the NCAA Championships. He beat #3 Kai Orine (NC State) by major decision in the quarterfinals, #2 Ryan Crookham (Lehigh) by major decision in the semifinals and #1 Daton Fix (Oklahoma State) by decision in the finals. He won four of his five matches by major decision in the tournament.
Arujau ended his career with 20 wins in the NCAA Championships, tied for the most in school history. Yianni Diakomihals, Kyle Dake and Troy Nickerson also had 20 wins in the tournament. He went 93-9 overall and won two EIWA titles during his career at Cornell.
