Yale Prevents Series Sweep, Halts Baseball's Win Streak at Five

ITHACA, N.Y. — Five unanswered runs between the third and seventh innings lead Yale to its 6-3 victory over Cornell on Sunday afternoon at Booth Field to avoid being swept in the three-game series and halting the Big Red's win streak at five games.

Jeff Pierantoni paced the Bulldogs offense with his 3-for-4 day at the plate. Jake Williams drove in three runs while going 2-for-3, and Garrett Larson also registered a two-hit game for Yale (13-19, 7-8 Ivy League).

Daniel Cohen pitched well for Yale, allowing two runs on eight hits in 7.1 innings to improve his record to 3-3. Tate Evans posted his Ivy League-leading sixth save after pitching a scoreless ninth inning.

Junior left fielder John Quinlan and sophomore shortstop TJ Swidorski had two-hit days for the Big Red (13-14, 10-5 Ivy League) in the setback. Swidorski drove in two of Cornell's three runs on the day and freshman designated hitter Mark Quatrani hit his team-leading seventh home run — a solo shot — in the second inning.

Sophomore right-handed pitcher Ethan Hamill started for Cornell, allowing three runs on seven hits in his five-inning outing.

For the third time in the series, Yale scored first on a safety squeeze bunt by Larsen following a one-out triple by Kaiden Dossa.

Quatrani evened the game in the home half of the second, depositing his home run over the Bulldogs' bullpen in right field. Six of Quatrani's seven home runs this year have been hit to the opposite field.

The first of Yale's five unanswered runs came in the third inning when Williams produced the first of his two RBI singles. Jake Pierantoni evaded the tag from senior catcher Nathan Waugh on a solid throw by sophomore Caden Wildman from right field.

Williams added his other RBI single in the fifth before the Bulldogs plated three more runs in the seventh courtesy of a bases-loaded walk, wild pitch, and sacrifice fly.

Cornell had chances to score in the seventh and eighth innings, placing runners in scoring position in both frames.

Senior Matt Barnhorst hit a one-out double down the right field line in the seventh, only to be stranded at third after a flyout and an inning-ending strikeout.

Swidorski trimmed Yale's lead to 6-3 in the eighth with a two-out, two-run single to right field that scored Waugh and Wildman, but runners were stranded on the corners when Barnhorst grounded out to conclude the frame.

Evans thwarted Cornell's plans of a ninth-inning rally, striking out the first two batters before inducing a game-ending groundout.
