ITHACA, N.Y. -- Cornell women's tennis fought to the end against a #52-ranked Princeton team, but the Tigers came out on top with a late push in singles competition to take the Sunday afternoon at Reis Tennis Center, 4-3. With the loss, Cornell fell to 7-11 (0-3 Ivy), and Princeton improved to 11-6 (2-1 Ivy).
Cornell jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead with a sweep in the doubles matches.
Lauren Stein and
Jenny Wong took a 6-3 win over Leena Bennetto and Eva Elbaz and
Michelle Ryndin teamed up with
Alexandra Savu to defeat Alice Ferlito and Neha Velaga, 7-5.
In singles play, Ryndin continued her winning ways with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Bennetto, giving Cornell a 2-0 advantage. Maia Sung defeated
Emma Baker in the No. 3 match, 6-0, 6-1 to tally the first Princeton point.
Lauren Stein took the No. 1 match, 7-5, 6-3, over Neha Velaga to build out a 3-1 Big Red edge. Princeton stole wins in the No. 5, No. 6, and No. 4 matches to take the victory from the Big Red and avoid the upset.
Cornell women's tennis is back in action next weekend to take on #50 Harvard in a Saturday matinee on April 13. First serve is set for 1 p.m. in Cambridge, Mass.
