ITHACA N.Y. – The Cornell volleyball team (5-2) tops Binghamton in their home opener 3-1 Wednesday night in Newman Arena.
With its first home win in the books, the Big Red has its best start to a season since 2019.
Cornell was led in the match by junior Eliza Konvicka who compiled a 16 kills (.316) to go along with five digs. Konvicka is currently ranked second in the conference in kills per set.
Senior Camryn Carlo with three huge rally stopping blocks against Binghamton now ranks sixth in the nation in blocks per set.
Jaida Sione and Mackenzie Parsons lent a hand in the attacking campaign, both notching 12 on the night.
First Set (20-25 Binghamton)
Cornell started the opening stanza up 5-1 highlighted by kills from Sione and Haley Clark and a service ace from Jackie Baker.
The Bearcats responded with a 9-1 run to flip the scales their way 6-10.
The rally is stopped when Cornell subs in Meghan Gaffigan followed immediately by her first kill of the game.
The Big Red make use of Binghamton errors and another kill from Sione to take the lead back 15-12.
The end of the set was back and forth until it tied at 18-18.
From that point, the Bearcats went on to close the set out on an 8-2 run 20-25.
Second Set (25-22 Cornell)
The beginning of the second set alternated points until it was tied up at 14-14.
Cornell snapped the tie up with three back-to-back kills, one from Konvicka then two from Gaffigan, 14-17.
The Big Red and Bearcats battled for points till the end when Carlo finished off the set with her second kill of the night. Cornell won 25-22 to tie the match 1-1.
Third Set (25-20 Cornell)
Cornell started the third set 6-1.
Binghamton responded with a 4-0 run of their own to bring the set back within one point (8-7).
Three straight aces from Sarita Pomar widened Cornell's lead to 14-8.
As the teams traded points that included three kills each from Parsons and Konvicka, the Bearcats could not come back from the five-point deficit. Cornell won the set 25-20 to take the lead in the match 2-1.
Fourth Set (25-18 Cornell)
Binghamton started the fourth set on top 1-4.
The Big Red responded quickly with a 3-0 run to take the lead 4-3 with kills from Konvicka and Sione and block assist by Carlo/Konvicka.
The two sides went on to trade points up until a Carlo kill sparked a 6-0 run for the Big Red to pull ahead 17-13.
The Bearcats added one before Parsons poured on another kill.
Cornell would finish the final match on a 6-1 run to win their first home match 3-1.
