SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Cornell volleyball team (6-3) falls to the undefeated Syracuse 3-1 on the road Sunday afternoon.
Four Big Red players recorded double-digit kills in the match against the Orange. Freshman Haley Clark led the Big Red with a career-high 17 kills on a .538 hitting percentage top of eight digs.
Freshman Mackenzie Parsons and Junior Eliza Konvicka continue their strong start to the season both registering double-digit kills. With 14 kills, Parsons tied her career-best kills in a game, last against Purdue Fort Wayne. Konvicka tallied her seventh game with double-digit kills with 11 on Sunday.
Jaida Sione notched 10 kills with two blocks.
Sarita Pomar dug up 13 balls for the Big Red marking her sixth match with double-digit digs.
All-Tournament Team
Following the conclusion of the Syracuse Invitational which included Iowa State, Le Moyne, Cornell and Syracuse, Haley Clark and Mackenzie Parsons were named to the All-Tournament Team.
First Set (19-25 Syracuse)
Syracuse started the match with two kills before the Big Red went on a 4-0 run to take the lead 4-2.
A kill from Clark ties up the match at 8 all.
The Orange would then start their first run of the day and force Cornell into a timeout at 8-12.
Out of the timeout, Parsons records two kills and an ace to bring the Big Red within two, 11-13.
Points would be evenly distributed before the 'Cuse would go on a 3-0 run to close out the first match 19-25.
Second Set (25-21 Cornell)
The Big Red started up in the second set 5-1.
Back-to-back kills from Konvicka started a 7-2 rally to create a large lead of 12-5.
The Orange responded with a 4-0 run that was quickly stopped with a kill and ace from Clark.
Syracuse would then string together six points to shorten the lead to 17-15.
After attack errors by the Orange late in the match, the Big Red closed the match with two Clark kills 25-21 to tie up the match 1-1.
Third Set (19-25 Syracuse)
Playing Syracuse tight at the beginning of the match, Parsons and Clark recorded three kills to bring the score to 4-5.
The Orange would then score the next seven of nine points to match their largest lead of the set 6-12.
The Big Red would cut the edge 12-14 with an ace from Jackie Baker and two kills from Konvicka.
Syracuse would go on a 3-0 run before back-and-forth play finished off the match 19-25 Syracuse.
Fourth Set (27-29 Syracuse)
Cornell went on an early run 9-3. Highlights include an opening kill from Meghan Gaffigan, an ace from Kohanikokuao Misipeka, a block from Parson/Clark, and then kills from Clark, Camryn Carlo and Parsons.
Syracuse would respond with a 4-1 rally to shave the lead to 10-7.
The middle of the set was an even trade of points with Cornell in the lead 20-13.
The Orange racked up eight of the next 10 points to bring the score within one, 22-21.
Two more kills from Clark brought it to the first match point of the game, 24-23.
The 'Cuse took the lead at 24-25, followed by a kill from Sione to tie it up 25-25.
In extra innings, Syracuse would take the set 27-29 and finish the match 1-3 home team.
