Volleyball Reverse Sweeps Columbia in Ivy League Opener on Homecoming Weekend

ITHACA N.Y. – The Cornell volleyball team (7-3) defeated its first Ivy League opponent, Columbia, in five sets on homecoming weekend at Newman Arena. The Big Red improved to 7-3 (1-0 Ivy).

The attack was led by Eliza Konvicka with a season-high 22 kills and 11 digs. The junior also added four blocks and three aces.

Jackie Baker (14), Konvicka (11) and Kohanihokuao Misipeka (10) all dug up double-digit balls in the back row for the Big Red.

Mackenzie Parsons contributed five aces from the service line to go along her 13 kills.

First Set (24-26 Columbia)

Columbia started hot out of the gate with a 5-0 run early to start the match and go up 2-7.

The Big Red responded with a 9-1 sparked by a Konvicka kill to take the lead back at 13-11.

The rest of the match points were traded evenly until the end of the match with a late kill from Columbia to end the game at 24-26.

Second Set (22-25 Columbia)

The second set was a back-and-forth battle from start to finish.

Cornell's first run of the game came early with a kill from Misipeka and an ace from Konvicka to take their first lead of the match at 3-2.

The next run of the game didn't come till the game was tied up at 10-10, the Lions strung together three points to pull ahead 10-12.

Towards the end of the match the Lions went up 19-23. Cornell added three more points but could not catch up to lose the match 22-25.

Third Set (25-21 Cornell)

An early kill from Parsons tied up the third set at 4-4 before the Cornell started their first run of the set that included an ace from Parsons and a kill from Brooke Cooper to go up 6-4.

Columbia came back later with a three-point response before dual kills from Cooper at 14-12.

A kill from Camryn Carlo sparked the Big Red to a 6-1 run at the end of the set to bring it to set point.

Parsons put down the final kill of the set to take it to four. 25-21 Cornell.

Fourth Set (25-13 Cornell)

The beginning of the fourth set was close, but at 8-10 Cooper smacked down her fifth kill of the night to start a six-point run that also included two Parsons kills and two aces from Konvicka.

Cornell was not done there. They finished out the set only allowing three more points from the Lions.

The highlight of the final half of the set was three aces produced by Parsons.

The Big Red won the set 25-13.

Fifth Set (15-11 Cornell)

Neither team was ready to be done.

With Konvicka's 21st kill on the day, Cornell goes on a 4-0 run to lengthen the short lead they had to 13-8.

Columbia responds with three more points but kills from Konvicka and Parsons close out the match for the Big Red and take the win for Cornell 3-2.

  • Eliza Konvicka smashes season-high 22 kills, only three behind her career-best 25.
  • Jackie Baker crossed the 600 career dig milestone (605) in the contest.
  • With eight kills in the contest, Jaida Sione reached over 200 career kills, now 204.
  • In the past four games, Mackenzie Parsons has recorded double-digit kills including 13 today.
