Big Red Picks Up 10 Wins at Chowderfest

CAMBRIDGE, MA — The Big Red captured 10 wins over three days of the Chowderfest tournament hosted by Harvard University. Cornell played matches against Harvard, Southern Methodist (SMU), Yale, Boise State, Illinois, Boston University and Boston College while at the tournament. 

The Big Red opened the tournament on Friday afternoon with three doubles matches. It was a slow start for Cornell as they dropped all three. Rushil Khosla and Eric Verdes fell to Harvard in a close battle. The match was 7-6 with a 7-3 tie breaker sealing the deal for Harvard. In a similar matter, Petar Teodorovic and Aman Sharma fell to another Harvard doubles group in a tie breaker. The match went 7-6 with a 7-3 tiebreaker in that face-off as well. 

Cornell then switched gears to the singles matches. Rodrigo Fernandes gave the Big Red its first win of the tournament defeating Beji Privara of Harvard in three sets with a scoreline of 6-2, 2-6 and 10-5. Teodorovic followed Fernandes with a singles victory against Valdemar Pape of Harvard in three sets with a scoreline of 1-6, 6-4 and 10-5. Verdes defeated Harvard's Marc Ktiri in two sets (6-3 and 6-1) and Khosla won against SMU's Kale Mize with the first set ending 7-6 with a 7-5 tiebreaker and the second set going 6-2. Sharma was the only Cornell representative that fell in his singles match on day one against Harvard's Melchior Delloye in two sets (6-4 and 6-2).

On Saturday, Cornell competed in the morning session of the tournament. The Big Red went 1-1 in doubles. Khosla and Verdes defeated one of Yale's doubles groups 6-2 while Fernandes and Teodorovic fell to a different Yale doubles teams 7-6 with a 7-5 tiebreaker.

Next came the singles matches of day two where Cornell went 3-2. Verdes defeated Eric Li of Yale in three sets. In set one the score was 7-6 with a tiebreaker of 7-4, set two was 4-6 and set three solidified the win for Verdes with a score of 10-8. Khosla defeated Yale's Dylan Tsoi in two sets. The first going 7-6 with a 7-8 tiebreaker and the second was 7-5. Teodorovic defeated Jim Ji of Yale in two sets (6-3 and 6-3). Fernandes lost his match to Yale's Vignesh Gogineni in two sets (6-4, 7-6) with a tiebreaker of 7-3. To close out day two, Sharma dropped his singles match against Boise State's James van Herzeele (3-6, 7-5, 10-8).

On the final day of Chowderfest, Cornell's doubles teams went 1-1 once again. Sharma and Fernandes defeated one of Boston College's doubles teams 6-1 while Khosla and Teodorovic lost to one of Illinois' doubles teams 6-3. 

In the singles matches that day, the Big Red went 1-1. Khosla defeated Boston University's Gabe Brown in two sets (6-2 and 6-2) while Fernandes dropped his match against Zachary Viiala of Illinois in three sets (6-4, 3-6, 6-4). 

The Big Red came out of Chowderfest with 10 wins on the weekend.
