ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell sailing team was its own competition in the first outing of the 2024-25 season when the team raced in the Women's Regatta at the KP Invite on September 7-8. The Big Red claimed first, second, and third place at the regatta, and finished over 50 points ahead of fourth-place finisher Penn. The team also grabbed a fifth-place finish at the KP Open Invite over the weekend.
At the Women's Regatta at the KP Invite, Cornell's three teams fielded one boat in the A and B divisions, each. The first Big Red team had
Bridget Green as the skipper and
Sophia Mulvania as the crew of the A boat while
Winborne Majette and
Sophia Fogarty commanded the B boat.
Sophia Devling and
Amelia Neumann guided the A boat for the second Big Red team and
Gilda Dondona and
Sophia Pearce sailed in the B boat. The third Big Red team had
Ava Gustafson and
Kate Moran in boat A, with
Pilar Cundey and
Kathi Keller in the B boat. The six boats combined for 34 top-three finishes, including 13 first-place spots, out of 84 possible races. In the final race of the weekend, Cornell finished an impressive 1-2-3-4-5, claiming all five of the top spots.
At the KP Open Invite, Boris Bialer and
Hope Campbell combined efforts in the A division while
Maya Conway and Wynne Williams raced in the B division. Bailer and Campbell finished a weekend-best second place in the sixth and 13th races, while Conway and Williams finished a weekend-best third in the second and seventh races. The teams finished sixth and seventh in each division respectively, but the combined score of 214 put the Big Red at fifth overall, just two points behind the Webb Institute.
The Big Red is back in action this weekend with a three-regatta weekend. From Saturday, September 14 through Sunday, September 15, Cornell will host the Susan Rogers '75 Memorial Regatta and the Jack Boehringer '52 Memorial Regatta, while also sending a delegation to the Faye Bennett Women's Singlehanded, hosted by Navy.
