Women’s Tennis Opens Spring Season

ITHACA, N.Y. — Cornell women's tennis is back for its spring season after an almost three-month break in play. The Big Red are opening up its season with an away match at Syracuse on Wednesday, Jan. 22 and following that up with a home match against Niagara on Friday, Jan. 24.

LAST TIME OUT: BIG RED COMPETE IN IVY INVITATIONAL

PHILADELPHIA, PA — Four members of the Cornell women's tennis team competed in the Ivy Invitational hosted by the University of Pennsylvania at the Hamlin/Hecht Tennis Centers this weekend. 

Senior Jenny Wong, sophomore Victoria Zhao, junior Emma Baker and sophomore Michelle Ryndin were the four Big Red that traveled to the tournament.

The highest finisher for the team was Ryndin who fell in the round of 16. Ryndin began with a match against Elizabeth Fahrmeier from Dartmouth and won 6-3, 6-2. In the round of 16, Ryndin faced Erin Ha of Yale and fell 6-3, 8-6, 6-2.

The other three Cornellians fell in their first matches (round of 32). Wong was defeated by Gavriella Smith from UPenn 6-2, 7-6(5), Zhao lost to Shyla Aggarwal from Yale 6-3, 6-2 and Baker fell to Sam Grosjean from Dartmouth 7-5, 6-1.

The rest of the Cornell squad is competing at the Big Red Invitational which will wrap up play on Sunday, Oct. 27.

Syracuse University Notes

Cornell last faced Syracuse on Sunday, Jan. 28, 2024 at Syracuse where the Big Red lost 6-1 to the Orange. Now sophomore, Michelle Ryndin was the lone Big Red player to grab a win against Syracuse in the match-up defeating Emilie Elde 6-3, 6-4 in the final match of the day.

Niagara University Notes 

Cornell last took on Niagara on Sunday, Feb. 5, 2023 where the Big Red swept the Purple Eagles 7-0. In doubles action, Lauren Stein and Emma Baker combined for a 6-0 victory and Sofia Iantosca and Fatima El Ashram dropped just one match giving the Big Red the point from doubles play. Baker is the only player that is still currently on the team from that Bunch. Lan Mi cruised in her match at No. 1 singles, posting a pair of 6-0 victories, while Iantosca also won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3, to put Cornell ahead by three. Baker dropped just one point in her straight-set victory at No. 3 singles, to solidify the Big Red's first victory of the 2023 spring season.El Ashram conceded three games – all in the first set – at the No. 4 spot, while Stein and returner Tanya Fan each came back after losing the first set to win in three sets to round out the sweep for Cornell.
