ITHACA, N.Y. --- Cornell women's tennis fell to Syracuse on Wednesday night 6-1 in its spring season opener.
Victoria Zhao earned the Big Red's lone point of the contest by defeating Serafima Shastova 7-6(4), 6-3.
The match began with doubles play where Syracuse swept Cornell 3-0 and earned the first point of the night. Miyuka Kimoto and Anastasia Sysoeva defeated
Jenny Wong and
Sage Loudon 6-2, Monika Wojcik and Nelly Knezkova defeated
Michelle Ryndin and Zhao 6-3 and Shastova and Shiori Ito defeated
Alexandra Savu and
Seychelle Balog 7-5.
With the Orange up 1-0 over the Big Red, the singles play began. Syracuse went 5-1 in singles with its one loss being attributed to Zhao. Kimoto defeated Ryndin 6-2, 7-6(0), Knezkova defeated Loudon 6-1,6-3, Ito defeated Wong 6-3, 6-2, Constance Levivier defeated Savu 6-2, 6-1 and Wojcik defeated
Tanya Fan 6-4, 6-3.
The Big Red will be back in action on Friday, Jan. 25 when they take on Niagara at the Reis Tennis Center in hopes of its first win of the spring.
