Doubleheader for Wrestling This Weekend to Open Ivy League Play

ITHACA, N.Y. –  The No. 9 Cornell wrestling team travel for a double dual weekend at Harvard and Brown on Saturday.

Harvard is 0-2 in duals after facing American and Navy on the road.

The Big Red are 61-9 over Harvard and are currently on a 22 match winning streak. The last time the Crimson beat Cornell was in 2001 in Cambridge. Last season, the Big Red defeated the Crimson 37-6 on Jan 27.

The Crimson return national qualifier, No. 21 Diego Sotelo in the 125-weight class. Sotelo was named Ivy League Wrestler of the Week (1/21) with a pin over Coen Bainey of American and overtime win against Nick Treaster of Navy last weekend to extend his winning streak to six matches.

Logan Brzozowski (133) picked up his first dual meet victory over Brendan Ferretti of Navy this past weekend. Luke Rada (184) earned his first dual win of the season defeating Daniel Williams of Navy in sudden victory, 4-1.

No. 31 Jimmy Harrington (157) is leading Harvard with a total of 10 wins so far this season. Meyer Shapiro looks to rematch Harrington after early season medical forfeit at the Journeyman Classic.

Cornell has seen number of Crimson match ups in open tournaments this season including; Christian Hansen/Haden Bottiglieri (TF C), Greg Diakomihalis/Logan Brzozowski (DEC C), Matt Furman/Doak Dean (TF C), Jimmy Harrington/Meyer Shapiro (M FOR H) and Justin Mayes/Luke Rada (DEC C).

ALL ABOUT BROWN

Harvard is 1-2 in duals after facing Lock Haven, No.18 Little Rock and Davidson on the road as part of the Davidson Duals.

The Big Red are 60-2 over Brown and are currently on a 26 match winning streak. The last time the Bears beat Cornell was in 1997 in Providence. Last year the Big Red shut out the Bears 47-0 on Jan.27.

The Bears return national qualifier, Michael Joyce in the 125 weight class. No. 32 Blake Saito (157) is the headliner for the Bears, winning Ivy League Wrestler of the Week (1/9).

At the Davidson Duals, Andrew Reall picked up victories over No. 10 Brock DelSignore (Little Rock), one of the biggest wins of the season for Brown

IVY LEAGUE WRESTLING IS HERE!

Cornell sits at the top of the Ivy standings going into Ivy League matches followed by Penn and Princeton. Each Ivy team starts conference duals this weekend.

Cornell had three consecutive Ivy Wrestlers of the Week, Justin Mayes (12/3), Simon Ruiz (12/10) and Meyer Shapiro (12/24).

New this season, the Ivy League has announced the addition of a postseason wrestling tournament. The six Ivy League schools that sponsor wrestling competed in the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA). Beginning in 2024-25, the Ivy League institutions will compete in the Ivy League Wrestling Tournament to determine automatic berths to the NCAA Tournament.

BIG RED TIDBITS

  • Cornell breaks into the top 10 of the NWCA Division I Coaches Poll at ninth as well as tenth on InterMat and FloWrestling charts.
  • Julian Ramirez (3-0) and Chris Foca (3-0) remain undefeated in duals since their midseason return.
  • Freshman Simon Ruiz leads the team in total wins this season with 11 and bonus points wins with six.
  • Meyer Shapiro came back after early season injury to win his last three bouts each with bonus points.

CYCLONE OPEN RECAP

Four Cornell wrestlers competed in an open tournament in Ames, Iowa at the Cyclone Open on Sunday.

Mikey Dellagatta won the 197-pound bracket to stay perfect on the weekend. Aiden Hanning (197) and Ashton Davis (285) placed fifth in their respective brackets. Tyler Ferrara beat ranked opponent No. 20 Cory Land of Northern Iowa before facing injury.
