ITHACA, N.Y. --- Cornell men's tennis fell to Vanderbilt 4-2 on Saturday evening at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
Adit Sinha and
Jack McCarthy started off the night strong for the Big Red as they defeated Callum Markowitz and Henry Ruger 6-1. Vanderbilt answered and tied the doubles play up at 1-1 as Nathan Cox and Michael Ross defeated #61
Eric Verdes and
Rushil Khosla 6-3. In the match that determined who would get the doubles point, Pablo Martinez and Danil Panarin defeated #109
Radu Papoe and
Rodrigo Fernandes 6-3 earning Vanderbilt the first point of the match.
Vanderbilt build off the momentum of doubles play as Panarin defeated Sinha 6-2, 6-1 and Ruger defeated Verdes 6-4, 6-0 putting Vanderbilt up 3-0. Cornell then bounced back as McCarthy defeated Ross 6-2, 6-4 and
Felipe Pinzon defeated TigheBrunetti 7-6, 6-1 to bring Cornell within one point of tying the match with one singles match left to play. In the final match, #100 Cox defeated #23 Papoe in three sets 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 to win the match for Vanderbilt 4-2.
The Big Red will now compete in the consolation game of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend against Old Dominion on Sunday, Jan. 26 at 10:00 a.m.
