Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

#4 Big Red Stunned By Union 4-3 In Overtime at M&T Bank Arena

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - The no. 4-ranked Cornell women's ice hockey team fell to the Union Garnet Charger 4-3 in overtime on Friday night at M&T Bank Arena. The Big Red dropped to 8-2-0 on the season, while the Garnet Chargers improved to 6-7-2 on the year.

Piper Grober, Beatrice Perron-Roy, and Alyssa Regalado registered the Big Red goals in the contest. Grace Dwyer, Rose Dwyer, Georgia Schiff, Regalado, Avi Adam, and Nora Curtis were credited with assists in the game.

Cornell goaltender Annelies Bergmann finished the game with 30 saves on the night. Union net-minder Monja Wagner put the Garnet Chargers on her back, making 43 saves to lead her team to victory. Maddie Leaney had the hot stick, earning a hat-trick and the game-winner against the Big Red.

Leaney potted her first of the day on a power-play eight minutes into the game. Grober responded six minutes later with a power-play tally of her own to knot the game up at 1-1. Leaney scored her second power-play goal of the game mid-way through the second frame to regain the lead for Union.

In the third period, Perron-Roy netted Cornell's second short-handed goal in as many games to tie the game up at 2-2. Karianne Engelbert put the puck toward net as a Union power-play expired and it paid off as it got behind Bergmann to give Union another one goal advantage.

Regalado potted the fifth special teams goal of the night, and Cornell's second power-play goal to tie the game with eight minutes remaining. Both teams would hold strong for the remainder of regulation to send the game to overtime.

After back-and-forth chances by the Big Red and the Garnet Chargers, Leaney was in the right place at the right time to find the puck and finish to give Union its third win over Cornell all-time.
