ITHACA, N.Y. - The Cornell men's swimming and diving team wrapped up a competitive weekend in a tri-meet against Princeton and Penn on Friday and Saturday at Teagle Pool. The Big Red earned a 171-129 dual-meet victory over the Quakers while falling to Princeton, 209-91. Cornell produced several standout swims and a series of strong performances across the lineup, including multiple event wins, relay momentum, and depth-driven scoring in strokes and distance free.
Cornell opened the meet with its top relay finishing second in the 200-yard medley relay, as the team of
Pietro Ubertalli,
Haihan Xu,
Daniel Simoes, and
Josh Toothman posted a 1:27.22. Ubertalli then delivered one of the highlights of the afternoon with a win in the 200-yard freestyle, taking the race in 1:36.81, holding off Princeton and Penn in a tight three-way finish. The senior added another victory later in the meet with a dominant swim in the 200 backstroke (1:43.82), leading a sweep of the top three spots by Cornell, with
Blake Conway (1:48.23) and
Gabe Anagnoson (1:48.31) close behind.
Cornell's sprint group continued to shine, led by Toothman powering to a win in the 50 freestyle in 19.69. Simoes added a fifth-place finish in the event (20.42), while
Mac Marsh placed seventh (20.80).
Jacques Grove delivered a strong meet with a third-place performance in the 100 butterfly (48.48) and a fourth-place finish in the 100 freestyle (44.16). In breaststroke events, Xu placed second in the 100 breast (53.88) and third in the 200 breast (1:58.53), with
Emmanuel Gadson adding two top-eight finishes.
In distance events, junior
Julian Correa led the Big Red with fifth place in the 1000 free (9:22.60) and sixth in the 500 free (4:34.80), while freshman
Duke Garvin added seventh in the 1000 (9:30.77) and eighth in the 500 (4:36.47). On the diving boards, sophomore Max Reis Trovillion posted a pair of strong results, finishing fifth on 3-meter (316.10) and second on 1-meter (272.45), while sophomore
William Klingensmith added top-six finishes in both diving events. Cornell closed the meet with a runner-up finish in the 400 free relay, as the squad of Ubertalli, Grove, Simoes, and Toothman posted a 2:57.40.
