ITHACA, N.Y. -- Virginia used a furious fourth chukker rally to inch past the Cornell men's polo team 18-17 in the championship game of the William S. Field Invitational on Sunday afternoon at Oxley Equestrian Center. The Big Red suffered its first loss of the season, slipping to 7-1.
The Cavaliers outscored Cornell 10-1 in the final chukker, getting nine goals - including three two-points scores - from Max Shaw to rally past the home squad. The Big Red led 10-7 at halftime and 16-8 entering the fourth before UVa's rally stunned the Big Red, who were whistled for seven of its 17 fouls late.
The contest was tied 5-5 after the first chukker as senior Benito Jaramillo-Samper tallied four of his 10 scores on the day.
Max Sponer added three, all coming in the third, and
Malachi Light was credited with three goals. A pony goal in the first accounted for the other Big Red point.
The match closed out polo's fall season. The Big Red will return to action in February.
