STANFORD, Calif. – Cornell women's basketball dropped its fifth-straight contest following an 82-50 defeat of ACC foe Stanford Sunday afternoon at Maples Pavillion despite senior
Emily Pape scoring a game-high 24 points. The Big Red move to 4-8 on the season, while the Cardinal improve to 12-2.
Pape led Cornell with 24 points on 9-for-21 shooting, connecting on a career-best six 3-pointers. Junior
Rachel Kaus contributed 10 points on 4-for-10 shooting, adding four rebounds in 24 minutes of action. Junior
Clarke Jackson added three points and four assists, while sophomore
Paige Engels dished out four assists.
Cornell shot 32.8 percent from the field (19-for-58) and 34.6 percent from 3-point range (9-for-26), while Stanford finished at 51.5 percent from the floor (34-for-66) and 28.6 percent from beyond the arc (4-for-14). The Cardinal dominated the paint with 56 points and controlled the glass with a 43-32 rebounding advantage. Cornell committed 21 turnovers, which Stanford converted into 24 points. The Cardinal also outscored the Big Red 17-3 in fast-break points.
Nunu Agara paced Stanford with 19 points on 9-for-13 shooting, adding five rebounds. Courtney Ogden contributed 15 points and five rebounds, while Hailee Swain added 12 points and three assists. Shay Ijiwoye recorded 12 points and three steals off the bench and Lara Somfai contributed nine points and a game-high 18 rebounds.
Cornell struggled out of the gate, missing its first five shots and failing to score in the opening 4:27 of the game before Pape got the Big Red on the board. The senior would keep Cornell in the contest early, accounting for all 12 of the team's first-quarter points.
The Big Red were held scoreless for nearly five minutes during the second quarter before Kaus ended the drought for Cornell with a layup at the 3:54 mark, she then made a 3-pointer to make it 36-23. Kaus, who was scoreless prior to connecting on three-straight baskets in the second, including a pair of three's, keeping Cornell within striking distance at 40-26 at the break.
The third quarter proved decisive as Stanford outscored Cornell 28-13 to take a 68-39 lead into the final period. Pape knocked down a three to start the second half, but Stanford responded with a 9-0 run to force a Cornell timeout. The Cardinal extended the run to 15-2 over 4:02 of game time, building a 51-29 lead.
Cornell, who had kept it close for most of the game because of the three-ball, cooled down from behind the arc in the fourth quarter, going 1-for-11 from the perimeter in the final period. Stanford maintained control throughout the fourth quarter, outscoring Cornell 14-11 to seal the victory.
The Big Red shot 60.0 percent from the free throw line (3-for-5), while Stanford finished 71.4 percent from the stripe (10-for-14). Cornell recorded nine steals and four blocks but was unable to capitalize on Stanford's 12 turnovers.
