ITHACA, N.Y. - The no. 5-ranked Cornell women's ice hockey team took down no. 9 Clarkson 2-1 on Saturday night at Lynah Rink. The Big Red improved to 17-4-4 on the season, while the Golden Knights fell to 19-10-1.
With the victory, Cornell remains at the top of the conference standings and has clinched a first-round bye in the ECAC Hockey tournament.
Rory Guilday and
Gabbie Rud registered the Big Red goals in the game.
Claudia Yu, Rud,
Mckenna Van Gelder, and
Alyssa Regalado were credited with assists in the contest.
Annelies Bergmann made 27 saves.
The Big Red and the Golden Knights held a strong defensive presence at the start of the game and throughout. Sena Catteral got Clarkson on the board 12 minutes into the contest to give the Golden Knights a 1-0 lead.
Cornell managed just four shots-on-goal against Clarkson's stingy defense in the second stanza, but the chances proved to be enough as Guilday found the back of the net late in Cornell's second power-play of the game to tie the game at 1-1.
The final period was played hard and tough by both sides as the ECAC Hockey foes battled for the go-ahead tally. With just under six minutes remaing in regulation, Regalado and Van Gelder found Rud who skated up the ice and put the puck in the net off the back of Clarkson net-minder Holly Gruber.
In search of the equalizer, Clarkson increased its intensity in the offensive zone. Eventually, the Golden Knights pulled Gruber and skated 6-on-5. Clarkson managed a couple of shots, but none would find paydirt as Cornell would skate away and complete the weekend sweep over north country foes, St. Lawrence and Clarkson.
