Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Bergmann, Dukaric Battles Between The Pipes To A 1-1 Draw

ITHACA, N.Y. - The no. 4-ranked Cornell women's ice hockey team played the Yale Bulldogs to a draw on senior day at Lynah Rink. The Big Red moved to 20-4-5, while the Bulldogs shifted to 15-11-3 on the season.

Piper Grober registered the lone Big Red goal in the game. Katie Chan and Mckenna Van Gelder were credited with assists in the game. Annelies Bergmann managed 22 saves on the afternoon.

The battle between standout goaltenders Bergmann and Yale net-minder Pia Dukaric did not take long to get underway. Dukaric was tasked early and often since Cornell was able to produce 17 chances, but wa up to the task finishing the first-period unscathed. Bergmann only saw three shots from the Bulldogs in the opening stanza, but one was a breakaway opportunity that she turned away.

Yale tempered Cornell's shots in the second period by more than half, but the Big Red still managed a handful of grade-A opportunities that Dukaric stood tall against. Both teams were handed a pair of power-play opportunities in the second period, including one of which Cornell produced seven total shots, to no avail.

The Big Red broke the ice in the second period when Van Gelder made a selfless choice during a breakout to circle behind the net and find Grober pinching down for the go-ahead goal. In search for the equalizer, Yale drew itself a timely power-play with just under four minutes left. The Bulldogs were able to do what so few teams have all season and find the back of the net for a power-play goal just 20 seconds into the advantage.

Yale committed a penalty with 50 seconds remaining in regulation to give Cornell the woman-advantage as the clock ticked low. The Bulldogs held their own for that time, sending the game into over time with just over one minute left in the penalty. The Bulldogs killed off the remaining time of the Cornell power-play, and Dukaric made another key save coming on a breakaway to send the game to shootouts.

The Bulldogs scored on its first chance, and failed its second two shots. The Big Red went 0-for-2 on its shootout opportunities, giving Yale the shootout victory.
