Prefontaine Shines and Bergmann Goes Unscathed In #3 Big Red's 3-0 Quarterfinal Win Over Union

ITHACA, N.Y. - The no. 3-ranked Cornell women's ice hockey defeated the Union Garnet Chargers 3-0 in game one of the ECAC Hockey quarterfinals on Friday night at Lynah Rink. The Big Red improved to 21-4-5, while the Garnet Chargers dropped to 13-22-1.

Karel Prefontaine (two) and Georgia Schiff registered Big Red goals in the contest. Delaney Fleming (two), Lil Delianedis (two), and Grace Dwyer were credited with assists in the game. Annelies Bergmann collected 14 saves on the night.

Cornell was relentless in its offensive-zone finding ways to challenge standout Union net-minder Sophie Matsoukas. The Big Red led the shots-on-goal by a count of 13 to 1. With less than two minutes left in the stanza, the Garnet Chargers turned over the puck and the Big Red made them pay when Prefontaine found the back of the net. Cornell also killed off successive Union power-plays in the period to keep the Garnet Chargers off of the board.

Cornell and Union went scoreless in the second period. Union managed its best period as far as shots were concerned, but Bergmann stood tall against them all making six saves.

Just over four minutes into the third frame, Prefontaine potted her second goal of the day to give the Big Red much-needed breathing room. As the Garnet Chargers chased a pair of goals, they commited a costly hook-infraction to give Cornell its first power-play of the game. Schiff put the game on ice with a tip-in power-play goal to secure the Big Red victory in game one of the ECAC Hockey quarterfinals.
