Yale Claims 48-46 Defensive Slugfest Over Women's Basketball

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Yale closed the game on a 6-1 run to complete the comeback and claim a bruising 48-46 win over Cornell on Friday afternoon at Newman Arena. The Big Red slipped to 7-18 overall (3-9 Ivy), while the Bulldogs improved to 4-21 (3-9 Ivy).

Senior Summer Parker-Hall, who will be among the players honored prior to Saturday afternoon's Senior Day, led three Big Red players in double figures with 14 points, with Emily Pape adding 11 points and Clarke Jackson scoring 10. Pape added six rebounds, four assists and three steals in the loss. The Big Red did yeoman's work on the defensive end, holding Yale to 35 percent shooting overall and forced 17 turnovers.

Mackenzie Egger led Yale with 15 points, 10 rebounds and six assists, while Avery Lee added 11 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals. The Bulldogs held a 38-32 edge on the glass.

After a nip-and-tuck first quarter that saw the Big Red tie it 10-10 on a pair of Jackson free throws with a second left, the Big Red went on an 11-0 run early in the second to take a 23-13 lead, with nine consecutive coming from Pape. A late bucket by Parker-Hall sent the home team into halftime with a 25-19 lead.

Cornell was still up six entering the fourth after leading by as many as 11 when Paper's bucket in the lane gave the Big Red a 32-21 lead with 6:47 remaining in the third. The Bulldogs slowly chipped away at the lead until finally catching the Big Red and going ahead 46-45 when Egger's jumper rolled around the rim and in. Cornell turned the ball over on the inbounds pass, and needed to foul five times in succession before finally sending the Bulldogs to the line. On the last foul, Egger was called for a technical foul for contact to the face with a swinging elbow. She made two free throws to make it a three-point Yale lead, then Cornell hit one technical to cut it back to 48-46. Cornell couldn't get a shot off on its last-gasp attempt with less than a second left and the Bulldogs earned the victory.
