Big Ivy Weekend for Wrestling with Ivy League Title Up For Grabs

ITHACA, N.Y. –  The No. 9 Cornell wrestling team has a big Ivy League weekend ahead as they host Princeton and Penn in battle for the Ivy League title. Action starts at 1 p.m. on Saturday in Friedman Wrestling Center and will be broadcast of ESPN+.

ALL ABOUT PRINCETON

Princeton is 8-6 on the season coming off wins from Harvard and Brown last weekend. The Tigers shutout Harvard at home 44-0.

Combined, the Tigers earned eight tech falls and a pin across the two dual meets, also throwing five major decisions into the mix across 19 matches wrestled.

Three-time NCAA qualifier Luke Stout returns for the Tigers at 197. Princeton has two ranked wrestlers, Stout is ranked 15 according to InterMat and freshman Marc-Anthony McGowan is ranked 21 at 125.

McGowan earned was named the Ivy League Wrestler of the Week after earning two technical falls this past weekend.

Cornell is 59-16 over Princeton dating back to 1908. Last season the Big Red defeated the Tigers 35-3 on Feb. 9 in Princeton.

ALL ABOUT PENN

Penn is 9-3 on the season and 3-0 in the Ivy after sweeping Harvard 43-0 and beating Brown 37-6. Penn won its seventh straight dual off the pair of Ivy League wins in the past weekend.

The Quakers return five NCAA Qualifiers; Max Gallagher (125), Cj Composto (141), Jude Swisher (157), Nick Incontrera (174) and Max Hale (184). Incontrera made it the farthest winning two matches in the third session.

Penn has seven ranked wrestlers this season including: No. 24 Gallagher, No. 21 Ryan Miller, No. 9 Composto, No. 15 Cross Wasilewski, No. 22 Swisher, No. 10 Incontrera and No. 21 Hale.

Seniors Composto and Miller are still unbeaten in Ivy action, holding 3-0 records with Miller on an eight-match win streak.

Cornell is 86-20 over Columbia and 54-1 in conference dating back to 1908. Last season the Big Red defeated the Quakers 26-8 on Feb. 10 in Philadelphia. 

IVY LEAGUE WRESTLING IS HERE!

Cornell, Penn and Princeton wrestling have a chance to clinch a share or the outright Ivy title this weekend.

  • If Cornell beats Princeton on Saturday, and then beats Penn on Sunday, Cornell would win the Ivy title outright on Sunday.
  • If Cornell beats Princeton on Saturday, and then Penn beats Cornell on Sunday, Penn would earn at least a share of the Ivy title on Sunday.
  • If Princeton beats Cornell on Saturday, and then Cornell beats Penn on Sunday, Princeton would earn at least a share of the Ivy title on Sunday.

Cornell (3-0) sits at the top of the Ivy standings followed by Penn (3-0) and Princeton (2-0).

The Big Red continues its dominance over the past three decades, running its conference win streak to 18 and making it 110-1 in its past 111 Ancient Eight matches dating back to 2001.

  • Brett Ungar looks to make his return to the mat for Cornell.
  • Five Big Red wrestlers find themselves on the first coaches' ranking for the 2025 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. A minimum of eight matches were required to be ranked.
  • Josh Saunders (141) ranked 24th, Ethan Fernandez (149) ranked 18th, Julian Ramirez (165) ranked 5th, Simon Ruiz (174) ranked 12th and Mikey Dellagatta (197) ranked 23rd.

BINGHAMTON/COLUMBIA RECAP

The Big Red took control of the Binghamton match right away with a 10-2 major decision at 125 from Marcello Milani over Carson Wagner and 13-1 major decision at 141 by Josh Saunders over Nate Lucier. Cornell then went on to win five of its seven victories with bonus points.

The dual was highlighted by a first period technical fall from Meyer Shapiro over Nate Lucier at 157. Teammates Simon Ruiz (174) and Chris Foca (184) followed up with technical fall of their own in the second and third periods of their matches.

The Big Red continues its dominance over the Bearcats making the series 12-0.

Cornell claimed their second shutout of the season against Columbia.

Mikey Dellagatta was up 7-1 in the second period of his match against Joe Curtis when he flipped him into a pin. Ethan Qureshi and Meyer Shapiro did not disappoint each earning technical falls over opponents.

Cornell continues its winning streak over the Lions making it 37 straight matches over Columbia dating back to 1987.
