Men’s Polo Rolls Past Yale Interscholastic 20-6

ITHACA, N.Y. — Cornell men's polo moves to an even 5-5 on the season after defeating Yale Interscholastic 20-6 on Saturday night. 

Max Sponer led the Big Red with nine goals including one two-point goal on the evening. Benito Jaramillo followed behind with five goals, Christian Finlay notched two goals including one worth two points and Dylan Tung had two goals. 

"This game was far closer than the score might suggest," said Peter B. Orthwein Head Coach of Polo Anthony Condo Jr., "and Yale played a great game overall tonight."

FIRST CHUCKER

  • Cornell scored five unanswered goals to start the game.Sponer and Jaramillo each had two and Tung had one.

  • Yale Interscholastic answered with one goal before the end of the chucker which came from P.J. DeAngels.

  • The first chucker ended with Cornell up 5-1 over Yale IS.

SECOND CHUCKER

  • The second chucker appeared very similar to the first as Cornell scored four unanswered goals to begin. Sponer and Jaramillo each had two.

  • Mike Joseph scored one for Yale IS before the end of the chucker.

  • The second chucker ended with Cornell up 9-2 over Yale IS.

THIRD CHUCKER

  • Cornell scored five unanswered goals in the third chucker of play. Sponer accounted for three and Finlay and Jaramillo each scored one.

  • The third chucker ended with the Big Red up 14-2.

FOURTH CHUCKER

  • Sponer opened the final chucker with a goal.

  • DeAngels answered for Yale IS with a goal.

  • Tung notched the next goal for Cornell.

  • Joseph scored one for Yale IS and DeAngels followed up with a two-point goal to make it 16-6.

  • Finlay and Sponer made back-to-back two-point goals to give Cornell a 20-6 win.

"Our guys are really starting to mesh well and understand the nuances of the arena game that will help them win," said Condo Jr. "I am thrilled to see what this team can accomplish as we head to the postseason."

The Big Red will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 22 as they take on the Huskies from the University of Connecticut at the Oxley Equestrian Center at 6:00 p.m.
