WEST HAVEN, Conn. — Seven unanswered runs across the first three innings helped lift Yale (13-5, 1-2 Ivy League) to a 9-3 victory over the Cornell baseball team (7-7, 2-1 Ivy League), thwarting the Big Red's hopes of starting conference play with a 3-0 record for the first time since 2013.
Jack Dauer paced the Bulldogs' offense by driving in a team-leading three RBI as part of a 1-for-3 day at the plate. Hayden Sobecki was Yale's lone batter with a multi-hit day, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored, as Yale scored all nine of its runs on just five hits.
Jack Ohman continued his torrid start to his collegiate career, allowing an unearned run across his six-inning start, during which he scattered four hits, walked one, and fanned a season-high nine. Ohman still has not allowed an earned run on the season, conceding four unearned runs in 25.1 innings over five appearances.
Senior left fielder
John Quinlan was the lone Big Red player with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a double. Sophomore shortstop
Kevin Hager, junior right fielder
Caden Wildman, and junior second baseman
TJ Swidorski also joined Quinlan in having doubles, as four of Cornell's six hits went for doubles. Sophomore catcher
Mark Quatrani and senior center fielder
Jakobi Davis drove in the lone RBI on the day for the Big Red.
Senior right-handed pitcher
Chris Ellison allowed seven runs (four earned) on four hits in his 3.2 innings. He walked five Bulldog hitters and struck out one. Junior southpaw
Noah Keller, junior right-hander
Josh Shea, and sophomore right-hander
Ethan Van Sice combined to allow just one hit over the final 4.1 innings in relief.
Yale jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning as all four runs came in situations with runners at the corners. An RBI fielder's choice by Chace Chaplin put Yale ahead before a Cornell fielding error enabled two runs to score. A failed steal attempt by Kaiden Dossa led Jeff Pierantoni to score from third after Dossa was caught in a 1-4-3-6 rundown.
In the third inning, Yale increased its lead to 7-0 with a three-run home run by Dauer, his second round-tripper of the weekend.
Cornell snapped Yale's streak of unanswered runs in the fifth inning on a fielding error that led Quinlan to score from second base before Yale upped its lead to 9-1 in the sixth on a sacrifice fly and a successful double-steal with runners at second and third.
Completing the scoring for Cornell, Quatrani had an RBI groundout and Davis drew a bases-loaded walk in the seventh inning.
