Early Surge Lifts Dartmouth To Win Over Women's Lacrosse

HANOVER, N.H. -- Cornell senior Maggie Pons reached the 100-point mark for her career, but Dartmouth's early spurt was enough to lift the Big Green to a 12-10 victory over the Big Red on Saturday afternoon at Scully-Fahey Field. Dartmouth improved to 7-3 (1-2 Ivy), while Cornell fell to 7-3 (2-1 Ivy).

Dartmouth scored the game's first five goals and the Big Red couldn't dent the scoreboard until the final seconds of the first quarter and Cornell was chasing the entire contest. The Big Red got within two goals at 9-7 early in the fourth and 12-10 late in the fourth, but the home team was able to control the draws and get timely saves from goalkeeper Gisele Todd, who made 11 stops.

Pons had a goal and two assists, becoming the 30th player in school history to reach 100 points and ending the day with 101. Classmate Caitlin Slaminko is on the verge of joining her, as her two goals and one assist moved her to 99 career points. Ellie Bergin, Alexa Donahoe and Kylie Gelabert each had a pair of goals, while Ella Wilmot recorded three helpers to become the ninth player in school history to reach 50 for a career. Donahoe added three draws and two caused turnovers to her afternoon, while Ellie Horner made five saves with four ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers in the loss.

Cornell held a 32-24 edge in shots and a 17-12 advantage in ground balls, but Dartmouth's 15-11 edge in draws and its 4-of-5 shooting from the 8-meter arc, along with its 11-5 edge in saves, proved to be the difference.

Catherine Erb scored five goals to lead Dartmouth, while Katia Christensen scored two goals and assisted on another. Maya Kendall won eight draw controls to lead the home team. Todd added two caused turnovers and three ground balls in picking up her seventh win of the year. She made seven saves in the second half to allow Dartmouth to hold on to its early lead.
