ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell women's sailing team took second at the MAISA Spring Women's Fleet Race Championship, solidifying its case for an at-large bid to the national championships when racing concluded on Sunday afternoon at Navy. It was one of two events on the weekend for the Big Red.
Cornell was in the lead heading into the final three races of the weekend after placing first in nine of the 27 races held through mid-day on Sunday. Georgetown was able to catch up late in large part due to a disqualification ruling against the Big Red in race 15A, allowing the Hoyas to pass Cornell in the standings. Georgetown held on in the final race, with its total of 112 finishing just ahead of the Big Red's 122 points.
Bridget Green and
Amelia Neumann sailed A division, finishing third with 66 points, including five race wins and eight races in the top three.
Sophia Devling and
Sophia Mulvania sailed B division, taking second with 56 points and winning four starts with nine in the top three.
Kate Constan was the team's reserve for the weekend.
The Big Red also went 5-9 on the weekend at the Dellenbaugh Women's Team Race in Providence, topping Brown and Tufts in the first round before going 3-2 in the silver round that featured the bottom six. Cornell earned consecutive victories over Dartmouth, Tufts and Tulane to wrap up the weekend.
Ava Gustafson,
Gilda Dondona and
Winborne Majette skippered the Big Red's 420s and FJs, with
Sophia Fogarty,
Ava Stevens and
Kate Moran served as crew.
Cornell returns to Annapolis on Saturday, April 5 when it competes at the Prosser Trophy MAISA Team Racing Championship.
