ITHACA, N.Y. — The Platt Cup and Harriot Trophy are both returning to East Hill, as the No. 3-ranked Cornell men's lightweight rowing team defeated the No. 2-ranked Princeton in the Platt Cup race, which served as the tiebreaker after both teams recorded two wins on a rainy Cayuga Inlet Saturday morning.
Cornell's victory marked the ninth time it claimed the Platt Cup in the last 12 editions of the event, dating back to 2012. The Big Red prevailed for the sixth consecutive time at the Cayuga Inlet, establishing the program's longest home win streak in the series, which began in 1964.
Racing with a light headwind of about five miles per hour, the winds subsided for the final race. All four races exhibited low currents and predominantly flat water along the 2,000-meter course.
Cornell commenced the day with two victories, decisively surpassing Princeton in the 4V8+ after recording a time of 6:26.2, which was 23.4 seconds faster than Princeton, which finished at 6:49.6.
By winning the 1V8+, the Big Red secured the Platt Cup and Harriot Trophies, logging a time of 5:51.8, which was nine seconds quicker than the Tigers' time of 6:00.8.
Princeton claimed first place in both the 2V8+ and 3V8+ races, bringing the day's events to a close. The victory in the 2V8+ was secured by the slimmest of margins, as Princeton outpaced Cornell by 1.8 seconds, while the 3V8+ crossed the finish line 3.4 seconds ahead of the Big Red crew.
