#14 Heavyweight Rowing Set to Face #9 Syracuse, #20 Navy in Annapolis For Goes Trophy

ITHACA, N.Y. — After spending this past weekend idle from racing action, the No. 15-ranked Cornell men's heavyweight rowing program returns to action in Annapolis, Md., for the annual running of the Goes Trophy against No. 9-ranked Syracuse and No. 20-ranked Navy.

Racing will begin at 7 a.m. Saturday on Navy's Lower Course of the Severn River with the 5V8+ race. The top four varsity races will follow, launching in succession 20 minutes apart from each other.

GOES TROPHY HISTORY
Syracuse has won each of the last four Goes Trophy races, dating back to 2019. The 2020 edition was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2021 running only featured Syracuse and Navy racing, leading to the trophy not being presented.

Cornell, who has won the Goes Trophy 25 times since the inaugural race in 1955, is looking to win its first Goes Trophy since 2018 in Syracuse, N.Y. Navy, who has won the trophy a record 27 times, will vie to hoist the Goes Trophy for the first time since 2017, doing so on the Cayuga Inlet.

Since the inaugural race, the host institution has won on its home waters 21 times, with Cornell (1956, 1962, 1965, 1968, 1977, 1992, 2002, 2014) and Navy (1973, 1979, 1982, 1985, 1995, 1998, 2004, 2006) each accomplishing the feat eight times. Syracuse has claimed victory at home on five occasions (1978, 1990, 1997, 2006, 2024).

Last year, Syracuse swept the top three varsity races to retain possession of both the Goes Trophy and Stagg Cup. It was the Orange's fifth consecutive time winning the Stagg Cup — awarded to the program with the most wins in the 1V8+, 2V8+, and 3V8+ races — tying Navy (1969-73) for the second-longest streak for winning the award. Navy also owns the record for the most consecutive times winning the Stagg Trophy, posting 13 consecutive victories between 1979 and 1991.

Cornell's last time winning the Stagg Trophy was in 2016, when it swept the top three varsity races in Annapolis.

LAST TIME OUT
The No. 3-ranked Harvard men's heavyweight rowing program swept all four varsity eight races, successfully retaining the Robinson Cup against No. 13-ranked Cornell on the Cayuga Inlet on April 5.

Racing featured a building tailwind of 15-20 mph throughout the five races between the Big Red and Crimson, accompanied by a slight tail flow and flat water.

Harvard achieved victories in the first four races of the day (3V8+, 1V8+, 2V8+, 4V8+), with each win coming by at least 15 seconds. Cornell's sole victory of the day occurred in the V4+ race, where it clocked a time of 6:41.0, which was 22.6 seconds faster than the Crimson's time of 7:03.6, marking the largest margin of victory for the day.
