Sailing Takes Third At America Trophy, Six Big Red Sailors Honored

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell sailing team posted its best-ever finish at the America Trophy, MAISA's Open conference championship, when the two-day regatta concluded on Sunday on Cayuga Lake. The Big Red also had four individual sailors honored with all-conference accolades.

Only one race was completed in each division on Saturday, setting up a busy Sunday in the Big Red's lone home event of the spring. The teams got 11 races in on Easter Sunday, and Cornell was able to shine, finishing with 115 points - behind only champion Georgetown (94) and Navy (111). The top two finishers claimed a bid to the Open national championships. Navy was able to chase down the Big Red for second on the final set of races, capturing a pair of seconds while Cornell was third and ninth.

Cornell's A division of skipper Bridget Green and crew Sophia Pearce (race 1), Amelia Neumann (races 2-9) and Sophia Mulvania (races 10-12) didn't finish lower than sixth of 18 boats with nine top-three efforts, including a victory in Sunday's opener. Its 39 points was behind only Georgetown (38). B division was a strong sixth with skippers Sophia Devling (races 1-8) and Winborne Majette (races 9-12) accompanying crew Mulvania (race 1), Sophia Fogarty (races 2-6), Kate Moran (races 7-10) and Pearce (races 11-12).

Senior Bridget Green was named a finalist for Open Skipper of the Year and captured first-team all-league honors, with Sophia Devling a second-team selection. Both Sophia Mulvania and Amelia Neumann were chosen as Crew of the Year finalists and first-team All-MAISA, while teammates Sophia Pearce and Kate Moran were second-team choices. This is the first time the Big Red has had a sailor as a finalist in all three categories - Women's Skipper, Open Skipper and Crew.

The Big Red will sail at the Admiral's Cup in Kings Point this coming weekend before gearing up for nationals.
