ITHACA, N.Y. -- Emmet Smith, an experienced collegiate sailing coach who has spent the past eight seasons at Tufts University, has been named the Ted Moore '71 Director of Sailing, Dr. Nicki Moore, the Meakem & Smith Director of Athletics and Physical Education, announced today.

"Emmet brings a wealth of coaching experience, a deep passion for and understanding of collegiate sailing and a strong commitment to the student-athlete experience," Moore said. "His track record of athlete development and mentoring and his experience at nationally competitive programs make him an outstanding fit for Cornell."

"This is an exciting moment for me, and it's got me thinking about what it takes to succeed: work hard, never give up, and — the surprising one — stay humble," Smith said. "Humility builds partnerships, mentors and proteges, and often lets the student teach the teacher. That's why I'm thrilled to join Cornell Sailing — I know how much we'll learn from each other."

Smith joins Cornell after serving as assistant sailing coach at Tufts since 2018. In that role, he coached the Jumbos at conference and national championship events, assisted with recruiting and athlete development, and served as interim head coach during the spring of 2019, including at the national championships.

Prior to his time at Tufts, Smith was head coach at Wesleyan University and Sacred Heart University. He also held coaching positions at Branford HS, Stamford Schools Sailing Team and Hamden Hall Country Day.

In addition to his collegiate coaching experience, Smith has worked extensively in youth sailing. Since 2021, he has served as a race coach and instructor with Nantucket Community Sailing, coaching competitive sailors and assisting with program operations.

A 2009 graduate of Yale with a degree in English, Smith was a member of the Bulldogs' Leonard M. Fowle Trophy-winning team as a senior. Following his collegiate career, he won multiple national and international team racing championships, including George R. Hinman National Team Race Championship titles in 2009 and 2012 and Wilson Trophy championships in 2010 and 2011. He was also part of the United States team that placed second at the 2011 ISAF Team Racing World Championship in Schull, Ireland.
