Six-Run Second Lifts Dartmouth to Series Sweep of Baseball

HANOVER, N.H. — A six-run second inning propelled Dartmouth (11-21, 8-10 Ivy League) to a 7-4 victory, completing a three-game weekend series sweep against the Cornell baseball team (11-19, 6-12 Ivy League) at Red Rolfe Field at Biondi Park on Sunday morning.

Dartmouth's Taer Rodriguez and Elliot Krewson each recorded two hits to lead the Big Green offensively, while Krewson and Ethan Brown both drove in two RBI.

Not even 24 hours after his first collegiate save, Bryce Loeger secured his first career victory, allowing one run and scattering five hits over five innings with three walks and four strikeouts.

Senior center fielder Jakobi Davis and sophomore third baseman Luke Johnson each hit a home run as part of their three-hit performances. Davis scored two of the Big Red's four runs, while Johnson drove in two RBI.

Freshman left-handed pitcher Sam Keene's struggles in the second inning caused Cornell to turn to the bullpen early. Keene allowed six runs (one earned) on two hits in 1 2/3 innings, issued four walks, and threw two wild pitches. Junior right-handers Josh Shea and TJ Swidorski, along with freshman right-hander Gus Magill, combined to allow one run over the final 6 1/3 innings from the bullpen, scattering eight hits, issuing just one walk, and striking out five.

All but one of the Big Green's runs in its six-run second inning were unearned, as Dartmouth sent 10 batters to the plate, drawing four walks and benefiting from a Cornell fielding error, along with an RBI single by Krewson and a two-run double by Brown.

Cornell cut Dartmouth's lead to 6-1 in the fourth inning with a two-out RBI single by Johnson, the second of two consecutive hits by the Big Red.

After being held scoreless for four consecutive innings, Dartmouth regained its six-run lead in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI double down the left-field line by Krewson. Rodriguez attempted to score from first base on the play, but a relay initiated by senior left fielder John Quinlan at the wall prevented another Big Green run from scoring.

A two-out walk drawn by sophomore catcher Mark Quatrani aimed to spark a two-out rally in the eighth inning as junior right fielder Caden Wildman and sophomore Kevin Hager followed with base hits. Hager's base hit drove in Quatrani, but Dartmouth's Kyle Klaric-Schell prevented further damage by inducing an inning-ending flyout.

In the ninth inning, after Quinlan struck out to start the frame, Davis and Johnson hit back-to-back home runs, cutting the Big Red's deficit to three, 7-4.

Hitting his second home run in as many days, Davis blasted the first pitch he saw from Dartmouth southpaw Jeff Lee over the outfield wall in right field. Johnson followed by depositing a 0-1 pitch from Lee into the protective netting above the left-field wall.

GAME NOTES
• Sunday marked the 194th meeting between Cornell and Dartmouth, with the Big Green extending its lead in the series to 104-89-1.

• Dartmouth secured its first three-game series sweep of Cornell since the Ivy League adopted the current schedule format, which began with the 2018 season. The Big Green's last sweep of the Big Red occurred in a doubleheader on April 20, 2016, at Hoy Field and marked its first season sweep at home of Cornell since winning both games of a twin bill on April 9, 2011.

• With the ninth-inning home runs from Davis and Johnson, the Big Red raised its season total to 36, breaking its tie with the 34 home runs from the 2001 team and surpassing the 35 round-trippers hit by the 1999 squad.
