ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- For the sixth straight time, a Cornell women's sailor took home the MAISA Faye Bennett Singlehanded championship. For the second year in a row, it was
Gilda Dondona that brought home the trophy.
Dondona's second consecutive conference title qualified her for singlehanded nationals and highlighted a weekend that included the Big Red's first home regattas of the new season.
The sophomore became Cornell's third consecutive multi-time winner, joining Lillian Myers (2019 and 2021) and Lucija Ruzevic (2022 and 2023) with a dominant showing despite completing just nine races due to lack of wind at Navy. Dondona's 20 points was well ahead of Gianna Dewey of Old Dominion, the runner-up with 45 points. Dondona won the first four races of the weekend and five of the nine overall with eight finishes in the top four. She led a Cornell contingent that added sixth (
Ava Gustafson) and eighth-place (
Pilar Cundey) efforts as two of five racers with 72 points.
The Big Red opened its home schedule with the Susan Rogers '75 Memorial Women's and the Jack Bohringer '52 Memorial Open regattas, collecting five total top 10 team efforts along the way.
The women had four units in the Rogers Invite, finishing third, sixth, eighth and 10th. The top boat featured skippers
Sophia Devling (races 1-4) and
Sophia Pearce (races 5-14) and crew
Paulina Freyre (races 1-4) and
Hope Campbell (races 5-14). Wind shortened Sunday's racing day to just 10 total starts, including three in the final day. In open racing, Cornell was fifth overall in the three-division event.
The Big Red returns to action next weekend when it heads to Kings Point for the MAISA Top 9 Combined women's and open regattas, as well as to New York City for Fordham's Jesuit Open Fleet Race.
