KINGS POINT, N.Y. -- For the fifth straight season, and the first with interim head sailing coach
Charlie Knape at the helm, the Cornell sailing team kicked off its campaign with a win at the Kings Point Women's Open on Sunday morning. The Big Red also claimed second at the KP Open Invite and secured sixth with Marcus Greco advancing to compete for the Carl Van Duyne trophy in singlehanded sailing at the Laser North.
Despite Sunday's sailing being canceled due to lack of wind, Saturday's results were enough to put the Big Red back on top in the women's race with 77 points, 11 better than Penn (88) and well ahead of third-place Columbia (105). A Division saw sophomore
Gilda Dondona and Kathleen Keller race to second with seven top-four efforts in eight races, including five in the top two. In B division, classmates
Ava Gustafson and
Hope Campbell were fourth overall with five consecutive top-six efforts to close out the day on Saturday.
The Open meet included strong efforts in A division from skipper
Sophia Devling and crew Sophoa Mulvania, while B division was made up of
Winborne Majette and both
Maya Conway and
Ava Stevens. Both groups placed among the top six in their devision, and the team's 117 points was well ahead of third-place Penn. The Quakers' A team claimed the title with 72 points.
Greco was among the top eight finishers, putting him in the conference finals at the Carl Van Duyne in two weeks at Kings Point. His 51 points put him one out of the top five, including a pair of third-place finishes among the eight contested races. He finished in the top 10 among 14 sailors in each start.
Cornell continues competition when it sends sailors to the Faye Bennett Women's Singlehanded at Navy and is at home for both the Susan Rogers '75 Memorial and the Jack Boehringer '52 Memorial Regattas on Sept. 13-14.
