NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The no. 10-ranked Cornell women's ice hockey team fell to the no. 13 -ranked Yale Bulldogs 3-1 on Saturday afternoon at Ingalls Rink. The Big Red dropped to 12-7-2, while the Bulldogs improved to 16-7-0.
Grace Dwyer scored the lone Cornell goal, which was assisted by
Beatrice Perron-Roy.
Annelies Bergmann made 31 saves in the contest. This marks Bergmann's ninth game this season with 25 or more saves.
Carina DiAntonio, Stephanie Stainton, and Emma McGowan scored goals for the Bulldogs. Yale net-minder Samson Frey collected 33 saves in the game, including 15 stops in the first period alone.
Cornell committed four penalties in the first period, and the Bulldogs made Cornell pay for two of those midway through the frame when DiAntonio and Stainton found the back of the net respectively. As the first period came to a close, Dwyer responded with a goal to cut the Yale lead to 2-1.
After a evenly played second frame, McGowan was able to extend Yale's lead to 3-1 at the 15:25-mark.
Cornell managed to find itself on three power-plays in the third stanza, but could not make any of them count. With three minutes remaining in regulation, Bergmann skated out of net as Cornell looked for two goals to bring the game even. Frey and the Bulldogs' defense stood tall during the push, holding the Big Red off of the scoreboard to earn it's eighth straight victory.
Special teams proved to be the difference between the Ivy League foes. Cornell committed an uncharacteristic six penalties, two of which Yale made count. The Bulldogs committed four penalties, including three in the third frame, but the Big Red could not make any of those count.
