Tuffy's 48 Saves Helps Harvard Stymie #12 Big Red, 3-1

ITHACA, N.Y. - The no. 12-ranked Cornell women's ice hockey team fell 3-1 to the Harvard Crimson on Saturday afternoon at Lynah Rink. The Big Red dropped to 14-10-2, while the Crimson improved to 12-12-2.

Karel Prefontaine scored the lone goal for Cornell, coming on it's second power-play of the game. Alyssa Regalado and Nora Curtis were credited with the assists. Annelies Bergmann made 22 saves for the Big Red.

Zoe Boosamra (two) and Ley Keira scored the goals for Harvard. Ainsley Tuffy made 48 saves in the game, including 22 in the third frame as Cornell made a push for the equalizer.

Harvard opened up the scoring in the first period on a power-play when Gwynn Lapp won the draw back to Boosamra who freely skated into the slot and flipped the puck past Bergmann to give the Crimson a 1-0 lead. Late in the opening frame Prefontaine matched Harvard with a power-play goal of her own to bring the score even at 1-1.

Boosamra found the back of the net for the second time at the 14:58-mark of the second period to put Harvard in front 2-1. Moments later, McSweeney found the back of the net for Harvard, but was successfully challenged by Cornell for a high-stick to keep the score at 2-1. Both teams had power-play chances in the second frame, with both penalty-kill units standing strong.

Bergmann skated out of the net as Cornell searched for an equalizer. The Big Red put Harvard on it's heals with the extra-attacker, producing 12 shots in a span of three minutes, but Tuffy and the Crimson defense stood to task and kept Cornell from finding the game-tying goal. With 12 seconds left, Emi Biotto gathered the puck and passed it to Ley who scored the empty-netter to bring the game to a close.

Despite out-shooting the Crimson 49-25, the Big Red were unable to put more than one goal on the board. In Cornell's 10 losses on the year, it has out-shot opponents in nine of those 10 instances. The Big Red is 14-2-1 in games where it scores three or more goals. Cornell is 0-8-1 when falling short of three goals.
