ITHACA, N.Y. – Cornell women's ice hockey senior goaltender Annelies Bergmann (Detroit, Mich.) has been named ECAC Hockey MAC Goaltending Goalie of the Week, the league announced Monday, after backstopping the Big Red to a season-opening sweep of No. 15 Vermont at Lynah Rink.
Bergmann went 2-0 on the weekend, stopping 42 of 44 shots for a .955 save percentage and a 1.00 goals-against average. Her shutout in Saturday's 1-0 win over the Catamounts was the 22nd of her career, matching Amanda Mazzotta (2008-11) for the most in program history.
"It's a pretty cool feeling," Bergmann told The Cornell Daily Sun after the game. "I look up to [Mazzotta], it's super cool to share [the record] with her."
Cornell opened the season Friday with a 3-2 win in front of 763 fans. Bergmann made 15 saves, including eight in the second period, to help the Big Red hold off Vermont. The Catamounts scored on a power play at 11:11 of the second to tie the game 1-1, but Cornell answered just 40 seconds later on Shannon Pearson's goal. Piper Grober scored twice, including a power-play goal in the third period that put Cornell up 3-1.
On Saturday, Bergmann was even busier. She turned aside all 27 Vermont shots over 59:59 of ice time. Twelve of those saves came in the second period, when Vermont had two power plays. The Catamounts finished 0-for-3 with the man advantage, putting 10 shots on net during those chances. Junior defender Rose Dwyer scored the game's only goal on a power play at 7:46 of the third period, with assists from Grober and Lindzi Avar.
Dwyer said Bergmann's presence is a calming influence for the defense. "[Bergmann] gives me and all the other defenders so much confidence back there," she told the Sun.
Bergmann enters her senior season with a résumé that includes three years of postseason recognition. As a sophomore in 2024-25, she was an AHCA Second Team All-American and ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Year, and she led the nation with 10 shutouts. Last season she went 20-11-2 with a .928 save percentage and seven shutouts, earning ECAC Hockey Third Team and Ivy League First Team honors. She was also a WHCA Goalie of the Year semifinalist.
Cornell (2-0-0) travels to Boston College next weekend.
