CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — The No. 12 Cornell women's ice hockey team outshot Boston College 39-30 but could not get one past Eagles goaltender Avah Sedore, who stopped all 39 shots in a 2-0 Cornell loss Friday night at Kelley Rink.
Cornell (2-1-0) was held scoreless for the first time this season. Boston College (4-1-0) got a power-play goal from Sarah Powers early in the third period and an empty-net goal from Madelyn Murphy in the final two minutes.
The Big Red killed all three Eagle power plays in the first period, including a too-many-players penalty late in the period, but BC held a 12-7 edge in shots. Cornell controlled the second period, outshooting the Eagles 20-4, but Sedore made 20 saves and the game stayed scoreless. Cornell also had power plays in the second period and late in the period that carried into the third, but the Big Red finished 0-for-3.
The deadlock broke at 10:44 of the third. Cornell's Abby Thibodeau was called for tripping at 10:10, and Powers converted 34 seconds into the power play, her fourth goal of the season, with assists from Murphy and Jilian Klein. Cornell pulled goaltender Annelies Bergmann for an extra attacker at 18:17, and Murphy sealed the game with an unassisted empty-net goal at 18:34.
Bergmann made 28 saves on 29 shots, including a dozen each in the first and third periods. The senior remains tied with Amanda Mazzotta (2008-11) for the school record with 22 career shutouts. Cornell held BC to four shots in the second period, and the penalty kill went 4-for-5 on the night.
Seniors Beatrice Perron-Roy and Delaney Fleming each had five shots on goal, and Karel Prefontaine added four. Lindzi Avar, Zahra Nauhaus, Rose Dwyer and Nora Curtis finished with three apiece. Avar won 11 of her 12 faceoffs as Cornell took 34 of 59 draws.
Ava Thomas led Boston College with 10 shots on goal. Cornell and BC meet again Saturday at 3 p.m. at Kelley Rink.
