Men’s Hockey Names Four Alternate Captains

| By:
ITHACA, N.Y. — Senior defenseman George Fegaras and senior forwards Tyler Catalano, Luke Devlin and Jake Kraft will serve as alternate captains for the Cornell men's ice hockey team this season, it was announced Monday afternoon (Oct. 26) by Casey Jones '90, the Jay R. Bloom '77 Head Coach of Cornell Men's Ice Hockey.

Along with senior forward and captain Ryan Walsh, the quartet of alternate captains gives Cornell a leadership group made up of its entire five-member senior class, the largest group in program history. Walsh is serving as captain for a second straight season.

The five-player leadership group surpasses the program's previous high of four, set eight times prior and most recently in 2024-25. The four alternate captains are also a program record, topping the three Cornell named in 2001-02, 2004-05 and 2024-25. The only other time the Big Red had four players holding the same title was 2015-16, when it named four captains.

"It's a unique class. They're really invested in Cornell Hockey," Jones said. "It's a bigger leadership group with four assistants, but when you sit back, they work so well together, and they all have different strengths. I think there's going to be a great pull from them."

Jones said his system, which brought subtle changes from former head coach Mike Schafer '86, is now familiar to the group after his first season, which has turned the seniors into extra coaches on the bench.

"You're not always correcting guys," Jones said. "When you've got good seniors pulling in the right direction, nothing but good things come from that. They're going to take us where we need to go."

The senior class has gone 63-29-13 through its first three seasons on East Hill, helping Cornell win the Whitelaw Cup as ECAC Hockey's tournament champion in 2024 and 2025. The group also claimed Ivy League titles in 2024 and 2026 and has reached the NCAA Tournament every season.

Cornell opens its regular season with a two-game series against Sacred Heart (3-3-0) beginning Friday, Oct. 30 at Lynah Rink. Tickets for both games of this weekend series and all other Big Red home games are available on bigredtix.com.
