CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The Cornell softball team completed day one of the Frost Classic on Friday afternoon. In the first game of the day, the Big Red fell 2-4 to the University of Illinois Chicago. Cornell bounced back with a 6-1 victory over Chattanooga in the second game of the doubleheader.
Charlize Cai was productive to begin the Frost Classic, producing five hits and four runs during the two games.
Lauren Holt and
Maddie Ullensvang both scored home runs on the day. Holt led the way for Cornell will three RBI on day one of the Frost Classic.
Mila Fiordalisi and
Emma Harshberger split time on the mound against UIC. Fiordalisi pitched five innings, striking out three batters and allowing four earned runs in the setback. Harshberger pitched one inning, facining three batters and holding that portion of the lineup to zero hits.Â
Madalyn Covelli took control of the mound against Chattanooga for seven innings, allowing zero earned runs and clinching three strikeouts in the win.Â

UIC opened the scoring on a wild-pitch sequence in the third inning, moving Samanta White in for a run. Siena Stickney singled to right field, bringing in another run and advancing a pair of runners into scoring position. Emily Brecht stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded, and was walked bringing in the third UIC run of the day. Larissa Ortiz sacrificed to bring Ariana OConnell in to extend the Flames lead to 4-0.
In the sixth inning, Holt homered to deep left field, bringing herself and Cai home. The teams would remain scoreless for the remainder of the game, giving UIC the victory over Cornell. Jasmine Whorley was credited with the win on the mound. Fiordalisi dropped to 0-1 in the loss.
vs Chattanooga Recap
Lauren Holt got things started in the third inning, striking a single to center field to bring Cai in for her second run of the Frost Classic. In the fifth inning, Ullensvang hit the second Big Red home run of the day, bringing in Cai for yet another run. Cai continued her strong day, doubling to left field to bring in
Susanna Pate and Samanta Esparza in the sixth inning.
Ella Harrod singled to center field, helping Cai score her third run of the game, and fourth run of the day.
Raven Jones grounded out to the short stop but Chloe Lackey made it home unearned to put Chattanooga on the scoreboard. The 6-1 lead proved insurmountable as Cornell would claim it's first victory of the season.
Madalyn Covelli earned the win on the mound. Emery Bales received the loss for Chattanooga.

The Cornell Softball team will return to the diamond tomorrow against UIC and Chattanooga. The Big Red and the Flames will meet at 11:00 a.m. at Frost Stadium. Cornell and Chattanooga will meet at 4:00 p.m. at Frost Stadium.
