ITHACA, N.Y. — Cornell baseball junior infielder
Owen Carlson has been named the Ivy League Player of the Week, the conference announced today, after a dominant performance in the Big Red's three-game weekend series at VMI.
Carlson was a force at the plate all weekend, going 6-for-10 (.600) with a double, four walks and five runs scored. He did not strike out across his 14 plate appearances, posting a .714 on-base percentage and .700 slugging percentage for a 1.414 OPS. His .600 average on the weekend was the best in the Ivy League and ranked 23rd nationally, while his .714 OBP led all Ancient Eight hitters and was the 17th-highest mark across Division I baseball.
The Los Angeles native recorded a pair of three-hit games over the weekend, beginning with a standout showing in the Big Red's 7-4 win in the opening game of Saturday's doubleheader, going 3-for-4 with his double, one RBI and scoring twice. Despite being held to 0-for-2 in Saturday's nightcap, he drew a pair of walks. Carlson carried his momentum into Sunday's rubber match, going 3-for-4 and scoring three of Cornell's four runs. He was tied with fellow junior infielder
Luke Johnson for the team lead in hits (six) and was one of four Big Red players to record an extra-base hit, with all four coming via doubles.
Carlson also played a pivotal role in Sunday's finale, igniting the Big Red's two-out, ninth-inning rally that forced a bottom of the ninth in Cornell's walk-off loss to the Keydets. He excelled defensively as well, posting a perfect fielding percentage with seven putouts and five assists at second base.
On the season, Carlson is slashing .365/.443/.500 with a .943 OPS and leads the Big Red in runs scored (10), while adding one double, two home runs, nine RBI and drawing eight walks against just five strikeouts.
Cornell will return to action this weekend, concluding its season-opening 16-game road trip and open Ivy League play at Princeton (5-11) at Clarke Field in Princeton, N.J. The three-game series is scheduled to begin on Saturday, March 21, with a doubleheader at 11:30 a.m. The series finale will be held Sunday, March 22, at noon. All three games are scheduled to be streamed live on ESPN+.
