BOSTON, MASS. — Cornell Big Red women's lacrosse used a dominant first half and balanced production on both ends to defeat Boston University Terriers women's lacrosse, 12-6, on Tuesday afternoon in Boston.
Under sunny skies and crisp 40-degree temperatures, Cornell wasted no time setting the tone with fire and intensity.
First Quarter
The Big Red struck just 30 seconds into the contest after winning the first draw, as Ellie Bergin finished off an assist from Ella Wilmot. Bergin added a second goal later in the quarter, while Cameron Traveis converted on a free-position attempt. Ellie Bornhoeft capped the scoring with a late tally off a feed from Emily Iacobellis, giving Cornell a 4-0 lead after one.
Second Quarter
Cornell continued its offensive surge in the second. Iacobellis opened the scoring with a goal off another Wilmot assist before Bergin completed her hat trick midway through the quarter with a clutch assist from Holly Newman. Bergin added her fourth and final goal of the game, late in the half, this time assisted by Iacobellis, as the Big Red carried a commanding 7-0 advantage into halftime.
Third Quarter
Lexie Tully extended the lead to 8-0 just over a minute into the second half, finishing a pass from Wilmot. Boston University broke through with back-to-back goals to cut into the deficit, but Cornell responded. Lilly Whaling scored with just seconds remaining on the shot clock, and Iacobellis followed with an unassisted, woman-up goal, to push the lead to 10-2 heading into the final quarter.
Fourth Quarter
Boston University opened the fourth with a free-position goal, but Whaling answered with her second of the game. Moments later, she assisted Maddie Tully for her first goal of the season as Cornell stretched its lead to 12-3. The Terriers scored three late goals, including a woman-up conversion, to account for the 12-6 final.
By the Numbers
Bergin led all scorers with four goals, recording a first-half hat trick, while Wilmot paced the offense with three assists. Iacobellis added two goals and an assist, and Whaling finished with two goals and one assist.
Defensively, Caitlin Tully anchored the effort with four ground balls, four draw controls and three caused turnovers. Mackenzie Clark posted a .455 save percentage in goal.
As a team, Cornell controlled the stat sheet, outshooting Boston University 32-14, including a 21-6 edge in shots on goal. The Big Red also held advantages in ground balls (25-12) and caused turnovers (19-7) while forcing 25 Terrier turnovers and converting 22 of 25 clear attempts.
With this win, Cornell's record improves to 5-3.
