ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell men's polo team never trailed, leading wire-to-wire in a 21-8 victory over Virginia Tech on Saturday evening at Oxley Equestrian Center. The Big Red improved to 10-1, including 6-1 at home.
The Big Red jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first chukker, led 13-4 at half and never looked back. It was 20-4 in the fourth chukker before the Hokies scored four late ones to close out the match.
Max Sponer led Cornell with nine goals, including seven in the decisive first half, while
Dylan Tung and
Malachi Light scored six apiece.
"This was a good game for us as we prepare to head to Nationals, said
Anthony Condo Jr., the Peter B. Orthwein `68 Head Coach of Polo. "It gave our starters some good minutes but also allowed for us to substitute some and get some valuable playing time for our rostered players. Next week will be a real big test for us as we host Kentucky and play them for the first time this year."
Cornell returns to action when it faces Kentucky on Friday, March 6 at 7 p.m. at Oxley Equestrian Center.
