#10 Cornell Extends Win Streak Over Princeton to Seven with 13-11 Victory

PRINCETON, N.J. — No. 10 Cornell scored five goals in the opening quarter to seize control and held off a pair of Princeton rallies Saturday, defeating the #3 Tigers 13-11 at Sherrerd Field to improve to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in Ivy League play.

The Big Red built a 5-2 lead midway through the first quarter, punctuated by back-to-back goals from Matthew Perfetto and Luke Gilmartin in a span of eight seconds, before Princeton cut the deficit to 5-4 by quarter's end. Cornell answered in the second, expanding the lead to 9-4 heading into the final two minutes before the Tigers scored twice to make it 9-6 at the half. A Goldstein buzzer-beater at the second quarter horn sent Cornell to the locker room with a three-goal cushion.

Princeton opened the third with two quick goals to pull within two, but Cornell responded with three straight of its own, the first from Brian Luzzi, the second by Luke Robinson and the third from Firth to push the margin back to four at 12-8. The Tigers closed the margin to 12-10 before Cornell's Ryan Goldstein scored off a Willem Firth assist with 3:31 remaining to provide the decisive cushion. Princeton made it 13-11 with just over a minute left, but Matt Tully and the defense held firm from the netminder and Cornell defense allowed just one Tiger goal in the final 15 minutes of the contest. 

Goldstein and Firth led the offensive charge with four and five points apiece. Goldstein had three goals and one assists, while Firth scored two goals and had assists on three others. Matthew Perfetto had two goals and assist in the win, while Luke Robinson and Brian Luzzi added a goal and an assist. 

Tully made 15 saves in the win against a Princeton offense that generated 43 shots. 

Tucker Wade paced the Tigers with three goals including a power-play strike, while Chad Palumbo and Colin Burns each scored twice and Nate Kabiri added a goal and three assists.

Game Notes
• Cornell improves to 45-42-2 all-time against Princeton, winning each of the last seven contests. 
Firth recorded his fourth game this season and sixth of his career with at least five points. 
With his four points on the afternoon, Goldstein surpassed head coach Connor Buczek (156 career points) for 16th all-time with 157. 
Goldstein now has 13 games with at least three goals scored, including two this season. 
Tully finished with double-digit saves for the fifth time this season. 
Michael Melkonian recorded 11 faceoff wins, the second time in his career he has registered 10 or more. 

Next Up

Cornell will close out the month of March with a home game against Ivy League foe Yale on Saturday, March 28.
