ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell sailing team claimed the MAISA Spring Women's Fleet Race Championship this weekend, edging Georgetown for the conference title in a competitive 15-team field hosted by the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. The Big Red finished with 98 total points, holding off the Hoyas (101) after two days of challenging and variable conditions on the water.
Cornell showcased depth and consistency across both divisions, placing second in each to secure the overall title. In A Division,
Winborne Majette teamed with
Anna Iacobucci and
Maya Conway to total 59 points, highlighted by a pair of race wins and consistent top-five finishes. In B Division,
Sophia Devling and
Paulina Freyre delivered a standout performance with 39 points, recording three race victories and finishing outside the top three just four times in 14 races. After leading following day one, the Big Red held off a late push from Georgetown on Sunday as conditions shifted from cold, gusty northerlies to building southerly breeze to secure the championship.
Cornell also competed at the Dellenbaugh Women's Team Race Trophy, finishing 12th with a 4-12 record against a national field. The Big Red lineup of skippers
Ava Gustafson,
Gilda Dondona,
Adrianna D'Agati and crews
Grace Penque,
Maeve Katics,
Laine Reshefsky and
Kate Constan earned wins over MIT, Bowdoin, Dartmouth and Charleston while gaining valuable experience against top-ranked competition.
Cornell will return to the water when it hosts the Prosser Team Race Championship on Friday and Saturday, April 4-5 on Cayuga Lake, racing out of the Merrill Family Sailing Center. A group of sailors will also compete for the Owen Trophy, hosted by Boston University.
