Fencing Takes Aim at NCAA Bids in Sunday Regional

| By:
ITHACA, N.Y. — Cornell women's fencing will send 12 athletes to the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship on Sunday at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., with the program looking to punch its best performers through to the NCAA Championships set for March 19-22 at Notre Dame.

The Big Red will be represented across all three weapons — epee, foil and sabre — and bring a depth of experience into Sunday's one-day event. Pool play will determine seeding before knockout rounds decide which fencers earn bids to nationals.

In epee, Cornell's most decorated individual performer is Nawal O'Neil, who posted a 14-2 dual meet record and an .875 winning percentage this season. Ketki Ketkar adds another reliable blade, finishing 32-12 overall with a .727 winning percentage, including a 12-2 mark — good for an .857 clip — in Ivy League competition. Emersyn Runions (29-14, .674) and Katherine Alexandrov (24-13, .649) round out a group that collectively went 157-72 in dual meets.

Cornell's foil contingent is led by Lana Lee, who compiled one of the program's most productive individual seasons with a 61-26 record and a .701 winning percentage. Brianna Lee went 45-28 (.616) on the year, and Mia Jo enters with 43 dual meet wins despite a 43-33 mark that reflects heavy competition volume. Cornell's foil fencers went 160-62 (.721) in dual action.

In sabre, Mia Hsu posted a perfect 19-5 dual record and a .792 overall winning percentage without competing in Ivy League action. Reya Ghayalod (32-13, .711) leads the way in total bouts, while Erika Chin was one of the team's most efficient performers at 22-9 overall (.710), including a 1-4 Ivy slate that demonstrated her willingness to take on elite competition.

Cornell's sabre group finished 143-64 in dual meets for a .691 winning percentage.

The NCAA Championship field will be announced Tuesday, March 11. Fencers must finish among the top qualifiers in their weapon at the regional level to earn a bid to South Bend, Ind.
