ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell women's tennis team came up just short in a 4-3 loss to No. 48 Princeton on Friday afternoon at Reis Tennis Center. The Big Red fell to 7-10 (0-4 Ivy League), while the Tigers improved to 16-2 (4-0 Ivy) in a tightly-contested match that saw four singles matches go the distance on Senior Day.
Princeton claimed the doubles point with victories at Nos. 2 and 3. Both matches were closely contested, with the Tigers earning 7–5 decisions on each court before the No. 1 match - where Michelle Ryndin and Sage Loudon held a 6–5 lead - was left unfinished. The Tigers claimed both matches by narrow 7-5 decisions in tiebreakers.
Cornell responded with a strong showing in singles, winning three matches and pushing the Tigers to the brink. Ryndin delivered a statement win at No. 1, defeating nationally-ranked Alice Ferlito in straight sets. The Big Red also earned three-set victories at Nos. 2 and 3, as Victoria Zhao and Loudon each rallied after dropping their opening sets to even the match.
Princeton answered with wins at Nos. 6, 4 and 5 to secure the team victory. Tsehay Driscoll opened singles play with a straight-set win at No. 6, and the Tigers followed with a three-set victory at No. 4 and another in a deciding set at No. 5. The clinching point came at No. 5, where Pearlie Zhang edged Andrea Martinez De Los Rios in three sets.
Cornell honored seniors Emma Baker, Tanya Fan and Gia Graziano prior to the match.
The Big Red will hit the road for a season-ending three match road swing beginning with a trip to Penn on Sunday, April 12 at 1 p.m. in Philadelphia, Pa.
