Cornell Edges Harvard, 13-11, After Eight-Goal Second Quarter

Cambridge, Mass. — Cornell rode a dominant second quarter and a locked-in defensive effort down the stretch to defeat Harvard, 13-11, on Saturday afternoon at Jordan Field.

After falling behind early and weathering a third-quarter push that saw the Crimson pull even, the Big Red responded with a composed final frame, holding Harvard scoreless over the final 15 minutes to secure the Ivy League victory.

Harvard opened the game with the first draw control and capitalized quickly, converting a free-position opportunity for a 1-0 lead. Cornell's first chance, also on a free-position attempt, was denied before the Big Red broke through at the 10:37 mark. Emily Iacobellis found the equalizer on a woman-up goal to make it 1-1.

The Crimson responded with three straight goals to take a 4-1 advantage, but Ellie Bergin stopped the run late in the quarter, cutting the deficit to 4-2 heading into the second.

Cornell flipped the game in a high-powered second quarter, erupting for eight goals to Harvard's two. Six different players contributed to the scoring surge, highlighted by multi-goal efforts from Iacobellis and Lexie Tully. Goals from Kathleen Michaud, Gretta White, Bergin and Ella Wilmot—several coming on free-position and woman-up opportunities—fueled the run as the Big Red carried a 10-6 lead into halftime.

"Ellie Bergin really stepped up and made a big difference in the draw control," head coach Jenny Graap said. "She helped us gain more possession time and offensive opportunities which allowed us to get in sync. Also, scoring on free position opportunities was a big part of our success. Emily Iacobellis with her first career hat trick was also amazing. The four goal lead at halftime gave us some cushion and allowed us to hold strong after Harvard tied it up."

Harvard answered out of the break with renewed energy, outscoring Cornell 5-1 in the third quarter to erase the deficit and knot the game at 11-11. The Big Red generated four shots on goal in the period, but three were turned aside.

In the fourth, Cornell regained its composure behind a strong defensive effort and standout play in net from senior goalkeeper Mackenzie Clark. The goalkeeper recorded four of her eight saves in the final quarter, anchoring a unit that held Harvard scoreless.

"Defensive effort was stellar," Graap said. "Clark had four saves, tons of credit to her for coming up big under pressure."

The defense also forced key turnovers down the stretch, with contributions from Gretta White, Lexie Tully and Caitlin Tully.

Offensively, Bergin and Tully delivered the difference, each scoring in the fourth to seal the 13-11 win.

Cornell finished with a 27-25 edge in shots and narrowly led in groundballs, 17-16, while converting 14-of-15 clears. Harvard held the advantage in draw controls, 16-9, but the Big Red countered with 11 caused turnovers.

Ellie Bergin led the way with four goals, while Emily Iacobellis and Lexie Tully each recorded hat tricks as well. White, Wilmot and Michaud added one goal apiece as Cornell totaled six different scorers.

Lexie Tully delivered a standout all-around performance, finishing with three goals, a season-high five groundballs, three caused turnovers and two draw controls. Bergin also contributed a season-high four draw controls.

With this win, Cornell improves their overall record to 8-5 and 3-2 in conference play.

"A road win at Harvard on their senior day is never easy," Graap said. "These Ivy games are always a battle, so it's huge for us and keeps our spirits high as we have two games left and are eyeing the Ivy tournament."

Cornell returns to Schoellkopf Field next Saturday, April 18, for an Ivy League matchup against Penn. Opening draw is set for noon, with the game serving as Alumni Day and a Morgan's Message contest.
