ITHACA, N.Y. — Yale posted victories of 16-5 and 6-3 to sweep Saturday's doubleheader at Booth Field, claiming the three-game weekend series against the Cornell baseball team.
The Bulldogs (22-11, 11-4 Ivy League) scored 11 unanswered runs over the final four innings to break a 5-5 tie and register a 16-5 triumph.
In the nightcap, Yale scored the first four runs over the first three innings, generating enough separation from Cornell (7-23, 5-10 Ivy League) for a 6-3 victory and regaining sole possession of first place in the Ivy League standings.
Saturday's doubleheader sweep marked Yale's first time claiming a season series from the Big Red since taking two out of three games in 2019. Yale's last time winning the season series in Ithaca came in a three-game sweep in 2018.
GAME ONE RECAP
Eleven unanswered runs over the final four innings turned a 5-5 contest into a 16-5 Yale victory in the opening game of Saturday's doubleheader at Booth Field.
Yale tallied multiple runs in each of the final four innings to distance itself from the Big Red, which was seeking its fifth consecutive series victory over the Bulldogs.
A two-run single by Yale's Kaiden Dossa broke the 5-5 tie in the sixth and was followed by RBI singles from Garrett Larsen and Jack Dauer, punctuating a four-run sixth that gave the Bulldogs some breathing room. Yale added two runs in the seventh and ninth and three more in the eighth.
Yale jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the third, scoring four runs in the first inning — recording only one hit and benefiting from a pair of Cornell errors — before the teams swapped five-run stretches.
The Big Red trimmed the deficit to 5-2 in the third on an RBI double by junior third baseman
Luke Johnson, followed by an RBI single from sophomore catcher
Mason Barela. A bunt single by sophomore first baseman
Jayden Shin on an attempted sacrifice enabled a Cornell run to score on a Yale throwing error, and sophomore left fielder
Tyler Beaulieu capped the rally with an RBI single. Cornell tied the game in the fifth on an RBI groundout by senior shortstop T.J. Swidorski.
Beaulieu and senior center fielder
Caden Wildman each had three hits for the Big Red in the setback. Wildman and Johnson had the only extra-base hits for Cornell, each collecting doubles.
Junior left-hander
Huxley Holcombe started for the Big Red, allowing seven runs (five earned) on three hits over five-plus innings while issuing two walks, striking out five, hitting five batters, throwing a wild pitch and committing a balk.
Senior right-hander
Josh Shea and junior right-handers
Max Foster and
Ethan Van Sice combined to allow nine runs over the final four innings in relief. Van Sice worked the final three innings, giving up five runs (three earned) on five hits while striking out three. Shea allowed two runs on four hits in one inning and Foster was charged with two runs without recording an out.
Yale's Jack Ohman allowed five runs on a career-high nine hits over six innings. Ben Winslow picked up a three-inning save, striking out five while allowing two hits and no runs.
GAME TWO RECAP
Plating four runs over the first three innings gave Yale enough cushion to complete Saturday's doubleheader sweep, 6-3, at Booth Field.
Yale's Tate Evans held Cornell to three runs on six hits across eight innings, issuing one walk and striking out four. Teo Spadaccini fired a perfect ninth to record his second save of the season.
Sophomore first baseman
Jayden Shin went 3-for-3 with an RBI, and sophomore left fielder
Tyler Beaulieu hit a home run in the setback for the Big Red.
Senior right-hander
Ethan Hamill started for the Big Red, allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits over 5 1/3 innings while issuing three walks and striking out six. Freshman right-hander
Michael Tight was the only reliever used by Cornell, tossing 3.1 scoreless innings while allowing one hit and striking out four without issuing a walk.
The Bulldogs' four-run outburst began with a two-run first inning on an RBI double by Jack Dauer and an RBI single by Colin Sloan. An RBI double by Garrett Larsen and an RBI groundout by Chris DiPrima in the third doubled Yale's lead to 4-0.
Beaulieu trimmed Yale's lead to 4-1 in the third with a one-out solo home run that traveled 412 feet before Yale extended its advantage to 6-1 in the sixth on Davis Hanson's two-run home run.
Cornell showed some life in the seventh as Beaulieu drove in his second run with an RBI groundout, and Shin followed with a two-out RBI single to make it 6-3. With the tying run at the plate, Evans induced an inning-ending groundout to preserve the lead.
After issuing a leadoff walk, Evans retired Cornell in order to conclude his outing, and Spadaccini fired a perfect ninth.
GAME NOTES
• Yale increased its lead in the all-time series to 115-83 and posted its first series win over the Big Red since 2019. The Bulldogs' doubleheader sweep marked the first time Yale won consecutive games over Cornell since posting wins of 2-0 (March 30, 2019) and 7-2 (April 1, 2019) in West Haven, Conn.
• Shin, who registered his first career three-hit game in the nightcap, extended his on-base streak to 12 games, matching freshman right fielder
Jake Hower for the longest such streak by a Big Red player this season. During the streak, Shin is batting .243/.378/.324 (9-for-37) with six runs, one home run, five RBI, six walks, two hit by pitches and four strikeouts.
• Beaulieu's three-hit game in the opener was his second career multi-hit game and his first three-hit performance. Wildman's three hits in game one were his eighth career three-hit game and the third such game this season, joining a three-hit game at Richmond (Feb. 27) and a four-hit outing at Fordham (March 8).
• Hamill's six strikeouts equaled his career high, matching a pair of six-strikeout games against Princeton on April 22, 2023, and March 22, 2026.
• Tight's four strikeouts were a season high, besting a trio of two-strikeout outings against Harvard (March 29 and March 30) and Dartmouth (April 4).
