Power At the Plate, Out of the Pen Help Baseball Snap Binghamton's 11-Game Win Streak

VESTAL, N.Y. -- Cornell jumped out to a 6-0 lead and the bullpen made it hold up in a 10-6 victory over Binghamton on Tuesday evening at Bearcats Baseball Stadium. The Big Red slammed four home runs on the evening in improving to 8-23. The America East-leading Bearcats dropped their record to 21-14 and saw their 11-game win streak come to an end in the process.

Cornell (10 runs on 10 hits) struck early and never trailed, getting home runs from Mason Barela, Tyler Beaulieu, Trent Lopez and TJ Swidorski to build a lead it would not relinquish. Swidorski homered for the fourth time this year and for the second consecutive week against the Bearcats.

Barela opened the scoring with a solo shot to left-center in the first inning, and the Big Red added another run in the frame on a fielder's choice by Jayden Shin to take a 2-0 lead. The game broke open in the third. Beaulieu launched a three-run homer to left field to cap a four-run inning, and Ryan Dillon followed with an RBI single as Cornell pushed its advantage to 6-0.

Binghamton answered in the bottom half, scoring three runs to cut the deficit in half, but Cornell responded immediately in the fourth. Lopez delivered the biggest swing of the night, a three-run homer to left that scored Jake Hower and Caden Wildman and stretched the lead to 9-3.

The Bearcats chipped away at the lead, plating three runs in the fourth on a two-run single by Matt Bolton and an RBI single from Steven Kraus to make it 9-6. That would be as close as they would get.

From there, Cornell's bullpen took over. Noah Keller, Braeden Johnson, Tavian Ramos, Michael Tight and Ross Yoshida combined to throw five shutout innings, allowing just one hit while striking out seven to preserve the lead. Big Red relievers retired 10 straight batters to close out the game and allowed just two base runners over the final five frames.

Swidorski added an insurance run in the ninth with a solo home run to left, his second hit of the game.

Ramos earned his first collegiate win with a scoreless seventh inning. Beaulieu and Lopez each drove in three runs to lead Cornell, while Wildman and Swidorski had two hits apiece. Dillon also contributed a pair of hits.

Cornell returns to Ivy League play when it heads to Providence, R.I. to kick off a three-game set with Brown on Saturday, April 25 at 11:30 a.m.
